The Wyoming Cowboys football team represent the University of Wyoming in NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision's Mountain West Conference. Wyoming's first year of football was in 1892, with the Cowboys opening their campaign with a shut-out (14-0) victory over Cheyenne HS. The school did not field a team the following year but came back in 1894 as an independent team with a 3-0 win-loss card under co-coaches Fred Hess & Justus F. Soule. Wyoming actually enjoyed its first five years of college football without a loss, its first defeat only coming in 1898 (at the hands of Colorado School of Mines), the same year the team suffered a winless season. Wyoming was an independent team until 1904, before joining the Colorado Football Association the following year. The team's stint with the CFA was shortlived as it transferred to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 1909. The Cowboys' stint with the RMAC was truly uneventful, turning out losing records on most years. In 1938, Wyoming found its way into the fold of the Mountain States Conference. It took nine seasons and four coaching changes before the Cowboys found their mark in the MSC, winning the conference title after sweeping their five conference assignments and finishing the season with a 9-1 record (the team's highest number of wins since its inception). The following year, 1950, coach Bowden Wyatt once again wrote another page in the Wyoming football history as he led his Cowboys to its first double digit win, (10-0 record; the team's first undefeated season since 1902) to successfully defend the team's Mountain States Conference Championship. The Cowboys also went on to win its first ever Bowl Game appearance against Washington & Lee in the 1951 New Year's Day edition of the Gator Bowl. The team ended its stint in the Mountain States Conference in 1961 with seven conference titles and three Bowl Game victories. Wyoming was admitted into the Western Athletic Conference from 1962 through 1998. The team claimed three consecutive WAC titles from 1966 through 1968, and also appeared in back-to-back Bowl Games in that stretch (won over Florida State in the 1966 Sun Bowl then lost to Louisiana State in the 1967-68 Sugar Bowl). Although conference titles were not a problem for the Cowboys in their 37 seasons with the WAC, the team would experience a six Bowl Game losing streak. The team would end its ties with the WAC in 1998 to become a charter member of the Mountain West Conference in 1999. The team's first taste of glory with its new home occured in the 2004 season, when the Cowboys finally ended a 38-year Bowl Game losing skid in the Las Vegas Bowl, defeating UCLA, 24-21.

Wyoming has thus far collected 14 conference and 1 division titles, and have played in eleven Bowl Games (winning five of them). The Cowboys have played their interconference rivals, the BYU Cougars, since 1922 with BYU taking the edge, 40-30-3.
