The University of Wisconsin-Madison is represented by the Wisconsin Badgers in NCAA's college gridiron wars and is currently part of the Big Ten Conference. Wisconsin's football program got underway in 1889, still playing in the Independent scene. Wisconsin was one of the seven original teams that took part in Big Ten's inaugural conference play in 1896 and wasted no time in making an impact as they captured the first ever Big 10 Conference title and defended it successfully the following year. The Badgers went on to win this title nine more times, more recently in the late 90's when Barry Alvarez spearheaded the team. The Alvarez-mentored Badgers is said to be one of the more successful in the Big Ten Conference since the early 1990's, as the team was able to capture 3 Rose Bowls and 3 Big Ten Conference titles. All in all, Wisconsin has appeared in 18 post season Bowl Games (winning 10 of them), 11 Big 10 Titles, 2 other national championship selections (in 1912 when the team went 7-0, and in 1942 when the team was 8-1-1), and is home to 2 Heisman winners (Alan Ameche in 1954 and Ron Dayne in 1999), 9 College football Hall of Famers and 3 Pro Football Hall of Famers.
As of 2006, Wisconsin ranks number 47 in the All time winning percentage list with a 56.18% mark. Aside from the national and conference titles, the Badgers also fight for two distinct trophies, the Heartland Trophy and Paul Bunyan's Axe. The former is to be disputed by the Badgers and the Iowa Hawkeyes while the latter is between Wisconsin and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
