The Washington State Cougars are the Washington State University's representatives to the NCAA Division I-A's college football wars, playing under the Pacific Ten Conference. Washington State's football program was established back in 1894 and played as an independent team up until 1916. The Cougars actually had a good headstart in the early 1900's as the team went 4-1-0 in 1909 under coach Keinholz. In 1915, the team which was then known as the Warriors, steamrolled past their opponents to finish the season with a 10-0 record under coach William H. "Lone Star" Dietz. The Warriors that year outscored their opponents 204-10 and capped their season with a Rose Bowl win over Brown University. Washington State made a strong candidate for the national championship that year as the eventual champs, Cornell University never really played in the postseason.

In 1917, the team joined the Pacific Coast Conference and won their first conference title that very same year. After the team's PCC championship and Rose Bowl appearance in 1930, the Cougars have experienced a drought in the past six-plus decades and for some time was considered as one of the worst teams in the Pac-10, as attributed to their low winning percentage and only a limited number of postseason bowl game appearances. The Cougars was absorbed by the Pac-10 in 1962 when the PCC was disbanded because of some controversy. In that 60-plus years without a conference title, the Cougars did appear in several bowl games, tallying a 3-1 record in those games. Coach Mike Price's 1997 team regained some glory back for the Cougars as they claimed their 3rd conference title and the team's third Rose Bowl appearance.

Recently, the Cougars have continued their resurgence in the Pac-10, with three 10-win seasons and three bowl appearances in the past six years dating back to year 2000. The team's over-all winning percentage is also above par (51%). The Cougars also have an annual date with rivals Washington Huskies as they meet in the Apple Cup, an annual meet of which Washington currently has the advantage, 64-29-6.
