The Demon Deacons is Wake Forest's college football program that participates in the NCAA Division I-A and the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wake Forest football program started way back in 1888 playing in the Independent scene. The Demon Deacon nickname however was coined to the team years after (1923) by Mayon Parker, a school newspaper editor, referring to the team's "devilish" play and fighting spirit after the team defeated Trinity (now Duke) under then coach Hank Garrity.

The Deacons has had a lackluster football run in the NCAA, with only six Bowl game appearances and a solitary conference championship to show, previous to 2006. 2006 however proved to be the breakout year for Wake Forest in what USA Today described as the Deacons' greatest football season [1]. The team was consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll during most of the 2006 season, ending the year in #18 in the AP Poll, #17 in the USA Today Poll, and #14 in the BCS Standings. The team finished the season tied in second in the ACC with a 6-2 win-loss card, before finishing with a conference-best 11-3 record. They also won both the 2006 ACC Atlantic Division title and the 2006 ACC Conference Championship, the latter sending the Deacons to the Orange Bowl game. Despite the Orange Bowl defeat, Wake Forest have now made it into the history books by being the smallest school to ever compete in the Bowl Championship Series.
