The Utah State Aggies represent the Utah State University in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision, playing under the Western Athletic Conference. Utah State's football program got underway in 1892, with the team winning its very first game against Utah via shut-out, 12-0. The Aggies played as an independent team from 1892 through 1901, joined the Colorado Football Association from 1902 through 1908, then became part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 1909. The team's first championship came in 1921, sweeping their conference assignments to claim the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship. The Aggies' next championship came in back-to-back fashion in 1935 and '36. The team left the RMAC then joined the Mountain States Conference in 1938. Utah State's first title in MSC happened in 1946 then played on their first College Division Bowl Game a year later (lost to Pacific in the 1947 Grape Bowl). The Aggies later that year played on their first Division I-A Bowl game but lost to San Jose State in the Raisin Bowl. The team made another serious run in the early 60's under Coach John Ralston. Utah State shared the MSC title in 1960 and '61 with a total of 18 wins in 21 games. The team also played Bowl Games in both seasons but unfortunately lost to New Mexico State in the '60 Sun Bowl and to Baylor in the '61 Gotham Bowl. The team left MSC to become independent in 1962 and after the school was reclassified as Division I in 1973, became Division I Independent until 1976. Utah State was admitted into the Big West Conference from 1977 through 2000, and in that span, the team was able to capture the Big West title five times. The 1993 Big West Champs also won the school a bowl game for the first time, defeating Ball State in the Las Vegas Bowl. The team began to slip in 1998 with a 3-8 record and has managed to win only 27 out of their 63 games since. Utah State also jumped several times from one conference to the other in that span, but finally landed with the Western Athletic Conference in 2005 which was a long sought goal of the program.
As of 2006, USU's Aggies has compiled just over 400 wins, with 11 conference titles, and 6 total Bowl Games played (won only once). The Aggies main football rival are the Utah Utes, whom the team plays in the Battle of the Brothers with the winner being awarded the Beehive Boot (As of 2006, Utah leads the series, 73-29-4). USU's other rival are the BYU Cougars, who also leads the series with the Aggies, 41-33-3.
