The UAB Blazers are considered as the "new kids on the gridiron block" in NCAA Division I-A, as the University of Alabama at Birmingham's football program was only established in 1991 and only was a member of Conference USA in 1999. A member of CUSA's East Division, the Blazers was originally playing as an indepent team for eight years. In its first two years, UAB was classified as an NCAA Division III school, moving notches higher in 1993 as a Division I-AA school before finally being classified as a I-A (or known recently as FBS) school in 1996. The Blazers has yet to capture a conference title and has thus far only appeared in a single postseason Bowl game (a Hawaii Bowl defeat against the host school in 2004).

Aside from the Conference USA championship and the Bowl trophies, the Blazers are also after another trophy, ‘The Bones’ trophy, which the UAB must dispute over rival team the University of Memphis Tigers. The game takes place every year, and changes venues alternately between Birmingham's Legion Field and Memphis' Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Although the Bones trophy only came to play in 2006, the battle between rivals has began since 1997, and as of 2006, UAB leads the series at 7-2.
