The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football squad representing The University of Tulsa and currently plays with the rest of the West Division teams in Conference USA. Tulsa's football program began play in 1895, when the team coached by Norman Leard won a solitary game, on a solitray point over Bacone JC. The team remained independent until 1913, afterwhich it joined the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference from 1914 through 1928. There were no "rookie jitters" for the Golden Hurricane on their debut in the OIC as they finished their maiden season with a 6-2 card then followed it up with an undefeated season in ten games (4-0-0 in conference play) two years later to capture the team's first ever conference championship. The team though suffered in the following seasons, but after several coaching changes Tulsa was back on track under coach Francis A. Schmidt in 1919 and '20, capturing the team's second and third Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference Championship. By year 1929, Tulsa left OIC with 5 conference titles, before heading to the Big 4 Conference where the team won its sixth conference title in its first year. Tulsa managed to string 3 Big 4 championships in 4 years under Coach Elmer C. "Gus" Henderson. In 1937, two years after the school joined the Missouri Valley Conference after leaving Big 4, Tulsa became an NCAA University Division (Major College) school. The Golden Hurricane was able to establish itself as a powerhouse and perennial contenders in the MVC, capturing the MVC title atleast twice in every decade, and winning 25 of their championships in that span. The impressive run in the MVC was culminated in 1942 as the team captured the MVC title (with a 5-0-0 record in the conference), was selected by a polling organization (Ray Bryne) as the national champs with a 10-1-0 record overall, and appeared in its first postseason Bowl Game, a shut-out victory over Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl. In 1978, Tulsa was classified as a Division I-A school and 8 years later, left its successful stint with the Missouri Valley Conference to be an independent team from 1986-95. In 1996, Tulsa was admitted into the Western Athletic Conference but failed to make a good run with only a single winning season in 9 years. The team then joined the Conference USA in 2005 and made a successful turnaround when it finished the season with a 9-4-0 record, won the C-USA West Division title, defeated the UCF Knights in Conference USA's inaugural championship game, then punctuated a highly successful season with a 31-24 conquest of the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Autozone Liberty Bowl. In 2006, despite losing in the inaugural Armed Forces Bowl to the Utah Utes, the team earned its first BCS ranking in school history (ranked 25th).

Tulsa, as of 2006, has 34 conference championships in four affiliations, 1 Division title, and 14 postseason Bowl Game appearances (winning 5).
