Trevor Vittatoe (born Trevor Lee Vittatoe on January 4, 1988 in Bedford, Texas) plays quarterback for the University of Texas at El Paso Miners in the NCAA college football tournament. In his first season as the Miners' starting quarterback, Vittatoe wasted no time in establishing himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in school history with his freshman school records of 3,101 passing yards, and 25 passing touchdowns, ranking just behind Oklahoma playcaller Sam Bradford in the nation's passing category among freshmen. His most notable performance as a rookie was hands down the Tulsa game where he rallied the Miners to a win over eventual C-USA Western Division champions.

Personal Life

Trevor Lee, nicknamed "Deisel," is one of Vernon Vittatoe and the late Kari Daun Kelsoe's children. He has two siblings, one brother (Braden) and an older sister (Whitney). His father played basketball at Hardin-Simmons while his mother was a former volleyball standout in Hurst L.D. Bell. Their parents were divorced when Trevor was only two. The children lived with their mother until Trevor was 17 when Kari got involved in a truck accident with her boyfriend Mike Betts. Kari, 41, passed away at the Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth in January of 2005. In high school, he pays tribute to her deceased mother by marking his left wrist with her name in black. He also makes it a point to kiss the urn that carries her mother's ashes before going to his games.

Trevor, a business major at UTEP, likes to play video games during his spare time.

High School

Vittatoe played high school football at Euless Trinity High School where he was a three-year varsity letterwinner under head football coach Steve Lineweaver. A two-time Academic All-District selection, Vittatoe was a member of the Trinity squads that claimed district championships in 2003 and 2005. During his junior year, he went 148-for-242 for 1,972 yards and 14 touchdowns with only five interceptions to go along with his eight scoring runs. The following year, he starred for the Trinity team that went 14-1 and won the state championship after completing 75 of 129 passes for 1,999 yards and 20 touchdowns with only four interceptions and 8 scoring runs. His efforts rewarded him with a spot at the Team Texas first team selection and in the All-District 6-5A first team, in addition to being named as the team's most valuable player.

College

Vittatoe had talks with several collegiate teams that include Texas A&M, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Texas-El Paso, Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State. Aside from UTEP however, none of the teams had offers for the Scout.com 1-star rated quarterback.

2006

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Vittatoe redshirted during his freshman year and helped in his team's preparations as part of the Miner Scout team. By the end of the season, he was named as the team's Offensive Scout Team MVP aside from being chosen to the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.

2007

During spring training, Vittatoe completed 10-of-15 attempts for 186 yards in the last of four scrimmages, connecting on touchdown passes with Donald Buckram (45 yards) and Tufick Shadrawy (54 yards). He was exceptional in the team's last two scrimmages of the spring, going 21-for-29 (.724) for 278 yards. He ended spring training completing 33-of-51 or 65 percent of his passes, for 458 yards with four TDs and no interceptions.

His strong showing in spring landed him the full-time starting role in 2007, making his debut in a low-scoring win against New Mexico where he launched 21 attempts with 6 completions for 59 yards. He recorded his first 100-yard game and his first career scoring passes in a loss @ Texas Tech, completing 12 of 26 passes for 202 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 31 yards on 8 carries. He also completed 15 of 27 passes for 261 yards and 1 score in a loss @ New Mexico State. After those back-to-back setbacks, Vittatoe led the team to three straight victories against Texas Southern (10-of-16 for 199 yards and 2 TDs), Southern Methodist (17-of-33 for 255 yards and 2 TDs), and a nailbiting 48-47 come-from-behind decision against eventual C-USA Western Division champion Tulsa (21-of-27 for 319 yards and 3 TDs) where he was adjudged as the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after connecting on the decisive 14-yard touchdown toss to Joe West with 58 seconds left.

The following week however started the Miners' six-game slide, starting with the East Carolina game where Vittatoe's season-high 409 passing yards (8th best seasonal figure in school annals) school record 38 completions, and game high 55 attempts (most by a Miner quarterback in 40 years) did not help the UTEP cause. Against Houston, he was limited to 8 completions on 23 attempts with three touchdowns as the Miners lost 31-34 to the Cougars. At Rice, Vittatoe broke his own record in pass attempts after throwing 57 passes (3rd-most in a game in the UTEP record book) and five touchdowns (3rd-most in a game in school history) in a 48-56 loss to the Owls. In his last three outings, he passed for atleast 290 yards and a total of four touchdowns in losses @ Tulane, against Southern Miss, and @ Central Florida.

By the end of the season, Vittatoe has rewritten the school record books with UTEP freshman best 3,101 passing yards (4th-most yards in a season by a UTEP QB) and 25 touchdowns. He also figured prominently in the statistical race, placing behind Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford in the freshman passing yards category in the FBS, 25th in the nation and 5th in the CUSA in passing yards per game (258.4), 31st in total passing yards, 32nd in the country and 5th in the league in passing efficiency (135.87) and 43rd in the NCAA and 6th in the conference in total offense (247.4 ypg). He ended the year completing 224 passes (4th in UTEP single-season records), 407 attempts and 25 touchdowns (both 5th in UTEP single-season records). His four 300-yard games is also fourth most in the school records. The Conference USA Coaches also listed him in the All-Conference USA Honorable Mention team and in the CUSA All-Freshman Team recognizing his splendid performance as a rookie.
