The UTEP Miners represent the University of Texas at El Paso in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football tournament, playing with the rest of the Western Division teams in the Conference USA. The Miners made its debut in 1914, winning its first game against El Paso YMCA under Coach Tommy Dwyer. The Miners were doing consistently inconsistent as an independent team but made some headway during Mack Saxon's head coaching tenure in 1929. In 1935, UTEP joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Under Coach Saxon, the Miners made their first postseason Bowl Game in 1937 after finishing the season with a 5-3-1 win-loss-card. UTEP went on to lose in the Sun Bowl, bowing to Hardin-Simmons, 6-34. UTEP made successive appearances in 1949 and 1950, losing the former to West Virginia while winning the latter over Georgetown, both in the Sun Bowl. The team won its first major title, the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, in 1956 under coach Mike Brumbelow after sweeping their conference assignments (5-0-0) and finishing the season with a 9-2-0 record. From 1960 through 1967, Texas-El Paso then named known as Texas Western College, became an independent team once more before joining the Western Athletic Conference as an expansion along with Colorado State in 1968. UTEP encountered minimal success as part of WAC, and succumbed to several losing seasons. The team though were able to appear in several bowl games (all three lost to Southern Miss, Boise State, and Colorado, respectively). In 2000, UTEP under Coach Gary Nord claimed its first conference title as part of WAC then went on to finish with a winning season (8-4-0), its first above .500 winning mark since 1988.

The Miners made their latest move into the Conference USA in 2005 after over 3 decades with the WAC. Aside from the major titles and Bowl Game trophies, the Miners also aim for a traveling trophy known as the Silver Spade. The trophy is awarded to the winner of the "The Battle of I-10," the game played between rivals UTEP Miners and the New Mexico State Aggies. Another traveling trophy, The Brass Spittoon officially known as the Mayor's Cup, is also awarded to the winner.
