Terrill Byrd (born on October 8, 1986) plays defensive tackle for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in the NCAA college football tournament. Eversince stepping into the field for the first time as a Bearcat, Byrd has immediately picked up the starting spot and has spent most of his career effortlessly proving why he truly deserved the position. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has also proven that height is not a prerequisite to be an effective lineman, making the most out of his brute strength and quick first step to give the oppostion headaches on offense. His consistency and hard work garnered him all-conference selections in multiple occassions before finally making it into the All-American list as a junior after helping the Bearcats post one of their most successful seasons to date in 2007.

Personal Life

Terrill is the son of Troy and Mary Byrd. His brother Tirrdell, whom he played with and was a fellow starter at Colerain suited up for the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. Terrill majored in Exploratory Studies at UC.

High School

Byrd went to Colerain High School in Cincinnati, Ohio where he played football under head coach Kerry Coombs. While playing for Colerain, Byrd played a major role in helping the Cardinals to three straight league titles and two district final appearances, sporting a 39-3 record as part of the team. During his senior season, Byrd tallied 178 tackles and 21 sacks to help the team go undefeated in 15 games and win the Ohio Division I championship, finishing the year as the 5th ranked squad in the nation. Individually, Byrd was recognized for his sterling effort in defense with a first team all-Greater Miami Conference, all-city and all-district selections, in addition to being named as Prep.com's National Defensive Player of the Year, the Cincinnati Division I Player of the Year, and the Ohio Division I Defensive Player of the Year. He was also chosen to play in the Big 33 Game at Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania alongside four other Cincinnati recruits.

College

The two-star rated lineman decided to stay close to home and chose UC over other recruiting schools such as Bowling Green, Kent State, Minnesota, and Toledo.

2005

As a true freshman, Byrd won the defensive tackle job in lieu of the departed Mike Wright, making his Bearcat debut against Eastern Michigan where he recorded two stops and half a tackle for loss in the 28-26 win. He had his first solo stop for a four yard loss against Western Carolina, added another tackle against Miami, had two tackles and a fumble recovery against Pittsburgh, an assist against Connecticut, 4 stops including one for a 10-yard loss against Syracuse, had four more tackles against West Virginia, two against South Florida, and a season high five stops in the season-ending loss to Rutgers. He finished the year with 22 stops and was fifth in tackles for loss with 6.5 in 11 appearances---all starts. He shared the Defensive Newcomer of the Year award with cornerback Mike Mickens and defensive end Trevor Anderson.

2006

During the Black-White Spring Football Game, Byrd helped the defense limit the offense to just 245 yards, finishing the game with two tackles for loss and a sack. He also worked on his weight during the offseason as coaches wanted him to trim down his 300-pound frame which has limited his mobility and stamina.

Byrd jumpstarted his sophomore campaign with 2 stops, 0.5 TFL and one quarterback hurry in the shut-out victory over Eastern Kentucky. Following the season-opening win, the Bearcats would go on and lose three straight to Pitt, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech, with Byrd recording 4, 0, and 2 stops in those games, respectively, including 1.5 TFLs against the Panthers and 2 TFLs and his first sack of the season for a 7-yard loss against the Hokies. He was limited to a solo stop against the Redhawks but had a couple of quarterback pressures in the 24-10 win. Following his 2-tackle, 1-sack performance against Akron, Byrd chipped in two solos and forced a fumble to earn the team's Defensive Player of the Game award in the 17-23 loss to Louisville. In wins over South Florida and Syracuse, Byrd had a combined 6 tackles, with 1.5 tackles for loss against the Bulls and a quarterback hurry against the Orange. In the loss at West Virginia, Byrd matched his career high of 5 tackles and for the second time during the season, was awarded with the team's Defensive Player of the Week honors. In the last three games of the season, Byrd recorded a sack for a 7-yard loss in the 30-11 win over Rutgers, two assisted tackles in the 26-23 win over UConn, and additional four stops in his first career bowl game win at the International Bowl against Western Michigan.

In 13 straight starting appearances, Byrd registered 31 total stops, 8.5 tackles for loss (tied for 4th in the team), 3 sacks (5th in the team), and 4 quarterback hurries to earn his first All-Big East pick as a first team selection. Byrd has also extended his personal record to 24 consecutive starts.

2007

Byrd's starting streak was halted when he was suspended in the season opener against Southeast Missouri State for violating the team's missed class policy. He returned against Oregon State and had three tackles with 0.5 TFLs in the 34-3 win over the Beavers. He also had three unassisted tackles and a season high 2 sacks in the road-opener at Miami, matched his career high of 5 tackles with 2.5 TFLs and a quarterback hurry against Marshall, failed to register a stat for the first time at San Diego State, then had 5 stops and half-a-sack in UC's sixth consecutive win of the season at Rutgers. In Cincy's first defeat of the season, Byrd managed to set a new single-game high of eight tackles including a sack for a 9-yard loss against Louisville then added a pair of stops with a sack and a QB hurry in the second straight loss at Pitt.

Against 20th ranked South Florida, the Bearcats halted its losing skid with Byrd chipping in 5 tackles, with one for a 3-yard loss in the 38-33 win, before recording a pair of stops and one quarterback pressure in the 27-3 win over 16th ranked Connecticut. Against WVU, Byrd broke his career high in tackles after making nine in the 23-28 loss to the 5th ranked Mountaineers before ending the season with 5 stops, including a season best 3.5 TFLs, with 1.5 sacks and 2 QB hurries in the 52-31 win at Syracuse. Prior to the postseason, Byrd was named as the recipient of the team's John Pease Outstanding Lineman Award and was also selected into the AP's All-American second team. At the Papajohns.com Bowl, Byrd consistently blew through the Southern Miss offensive line to register a game-high nine tackles, three tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks in the 31-21 victory. He finished the year as the team's 7th-leading tackler with 56 stops, was second in sacks (8.0), while recording a team-leading 17.0 tackles for loss.

2008

On the 5th of March, Byrd was arrested and was cited for smoking marijuana at his residence. He was slapped with a 1-game suspension that will be served in the season opener against Eastern Kentucky and was forced to sit out the first week of spring drills. Upon his return to practice, he was placed on the second team but managed to work his way up to the first team with his performance. Expectations for the All-American tackle has been raised following the departure of UC's standout defensive ends Anthony Hoke and Angelo Craig.
