The Tennessee Volunteers is an NCAA Division 1-Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team that represents the University of Tennessee in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. Tennessee's long storied football program began in 1891 as a makeshift student squad, playing without a coach, competed for the first time but was humbly shut-out by a team from Sewanee, 0-24. The following year (October 15 1892), the Volunteers recorded its first ever win at the expense of Maryville College, 25-0. After competing without a coach for five seasons, Tennessee would tap the services of J.A. Pierce as the first ever Tennessee coach. From 1896 through 1921, the Volunteers would be affiliated with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, winning their first conference title once in that span (1914). In 1922, the team would join the Southern Conference and would taste their first Southern Conference title six seasons later under the tutelage of coach Robert R. Neyland. After winning the same title in 1932, Tennessee parted ways with Southern to become one of the charter members of the Southeastern Conference. After the 1934 season, Coach Neyland, an Army Captain at that time, was recalled into military service at Panama. The team would suffer momentarily during Coach Neyland's absence but would work their way up into the 1938 season. After a couple of years of regrouping, the Volunteers hit paydirt in 1938 when the team finished the season with an 11-0 record enroute to its first SEC title, and in the process earned its first National Championship Selection from various organizations, including the Billingsley Report, Massey Ratings, Sagarin Ratings, among others. That year, the team also appeared in its first major bowl game, winning over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. By 1940, the team was already a three peat SEC champion, and have already made their third bowl game appearance. Its 10-1 record that year also won them National Championship selections from the Dunkel System and the Williamson System. In 1950, coach Neyland had another "national championship" year, atleast according to six polling organizations which ranked the team #1 after finishing the season with an 11-1 record. In 1951, Neyland's team led by eventual Heisman runner-up Hank Lauricella won the team's first "NCAA-wide" (undisputed) recognized national title. Despite coach Neyland's retirement in 1952, the team would remain competitive as it continues to appear in various postseason bowl games and win several more SEC championships.

Tennessee would move back to spotlight in 1998 as the team would capture their 2nd national title. The Vols also won the first ever BCS title game against Florida and would finish the season with a 13-0 record.

As of 2006, the Vols have won over 700 wins, with an all-time winning percentage of 69.7%, have appeared in 46 postseason bowl games (winning 24), have officially claimed two national titles (1951 and '98), won 16 conference championships, and has produced 70 All-Americans. Tennessee's known rivals are Alabama (Vols-Crimson Tide rivalry is dubbed as "The Third Saturday In October"), Florida (Vols-Gators rivalry is dubbed as "The Third Saturday in September"), Vanderbilt, and Kentucky.
