Syracuse has dismissed head football coach Greg Robinsion Sunday, less than a day after the Orange suffered yet another beating at the hands of Connecticut at home to the tune of 14-39.
SU Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross made the announcement at a press conference, terminating Robinson effective at the end of the season.
“I have made the decision to move our football program in a new direction and have informed Greg Robinson that his tenure as Syracuse’s head coach will end at the conclusion of this season," Gross said. “Coach Robinson worked very hard to try to establish a winning program, one that could eventually compete for the conference championship on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the progress we expected to see has not occurred."
In their meeting, Gross gave Robinson the nod to finish coaching the Orange's last two assignments.
"I wanted to make sure under no uncertain terms he saw me as the head football coach until the season was concluded," said Robinson. "I've seen it become chaotic. This will not be chaotic."
The Orange will close their season out with road games at Notre Dame and Cincinnati, trying to avoid a third 10-loss season under Robinson. 'Cuse had never reached double-digit losses in a season before Robinson was hired in January 2005. His first season went 1-10 which was the first time since the school started playing on the gridiron in 1889 that it lost 10 games.
Robinson will end his tenure at SU with a 9-36 overall record, including 3-25 in the Big East. He still has a year left on a contract that pays $1.1 million per season.
Gross said a search was under way but offered no details.
