The Stanford Cardinal is a Division I-A football team, representing the Stanford University in the NCAA's college football tournament under the Pacific Ten Conference. Stanford's first football program started play in 1891 and played as an independent team for 15 years. After not fielding a team from 1906 through 1918, Stanford was admitted to the Pacific Coast Conference in 1919. After turning out several winning, but so-so seasons, the Cardinal finally hit paydirt in 1924 as the team of then coach Glenn "Pop" Warner won its first conference championship. Stanford was also invited to only its second bowl game in 24 years, unfortuntely losing to Notre Dame 10-27. It was only the beginning for the Cardinal as two seasons later, the team would eventually capture its first ever national title. The team would once again be invited to the Rose Bowl but once again came short to winning as the contest ended in a draw (7-7). The team would eventually break the "bowl game jinx" as it won the Rose Bowl a year later over Pittsburgh (7-6). C.E. Thornhill took over the coaching position in 1933 and continued Stanford's impressive showing by leading the team to its 4th conference title and its fifth bowl game appearance. The team would eventually win 3 consecutive conference titles, punctuated by the team's 8-1 record in 1935 which won a national championship selection from the Massey Ratings. In 1940 under coach Clark Shaughnessy, Stanford was selected by several groups as the national champs (Helms Athletic Foundation, Libby, and Poling System) with its 10-0 record. In 1959, after PCC was dissolved, Stanford became a charter member of the Pac-10 but under coach Jack Curtice, failed to make a strong start. It took 12 seasons for the Cardinal to taste conference championship once more, capturing their first Pac-10 title in 1970 enroute to another Rose Bowl appearance.

As of 2006, Stanford has thus far compiled a 56.8 winning clip, appeared in 20 postseason bowl games (winning 9 with a draw), captured 2 wire national titles and 12 conference championships, and produced a Heisman winner and 52 All Americans. The team has also taken home the Stanford Axe (a trophy awarded to the winner of the annual "Big Game" between the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University) 37 times.

[edit] Highlights

The Play. In 1982, Stanford and California competed in many described as one of the best college football game finishes ever. John Elway and the Stanford Cardinals had a successfull drive to give the Cardinals a 20-19 lead on a field goal. On the ensuing play with 4 ticks to go, the Cardinals squibbed the kick but the Bears recovered and used five lateral passes to get to the endzone for the touchdown. It was a chaotic play altogether as the Stanford Band had already entered the field thinking the game was over but the officials ruled the touchdown as legitimate.
