The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (Southern Miss for short) is the football program of the University of Southern Mississippi that plays in NCAA's Division I-A and is part of Conference USA's East division. Established in 1912, Southern Miss played as an independent squad for sometime before entering the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931. After 11 seasons with the SIAA, the Eagles moved on with the Gulf State Conference in 1948 where the team finally broke in to the championship column, bagging the Gulf States Conference title thrice in 4 seasons (1948,'50,51). It took another 40-plus years for the Eagles to taste championship, this time with the Conference USA.

As part of CUSA, Southern Miss was the inaugural co-champs along with Houston in 1996. They won this title three more times, in 1997, '99, and 2003. In 2006, Houston and Southern Miss crossed roads once again with the Conference USA title at stake but unfortunately, the Eagles lost. As of 2006, the Golden Eagles has 15 trips to postseason Bowl games (winning 6), 7 conference titles, and ranks #25 in all-time winning percentage with a 59.51% clip.
