The South Florida Bulls is an NCAA Division I-A college football team representing the University of South Florida in the Big East Conference. The USF Bulls squad made their official debut in the 1997 season as an independent team while still in the Division I-AA level. In their first year, the Bulls were able to compile a decent 5-6 win-loss record. After four years of consistent showings as a Division I-AA independent team, South Florida moved up to the Division I-A level but remained an independent team. The team reached its highest total of 9 wins against 2 losses in its 2002 season before joining the Conference USA in 2003. In 2005, USF made another jump to become the latest additions to the Big East Conference. USF did pretty well in its debut with its new home as the team finished the season with an even 6-6 record, and an invite to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, which the team eventually lost to the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Incidentally, that game was the first time the Bulls was shut-out in a game. The following year, Coach Jim Leavitt's boys showed mark improvement as the team finished the season with a 9-4 win-loss record, including a Papajohns.com Bowl victory over the ECU Pirates. The Bulls' starting quarterback, Matt Grothe, was awarded with the Big East Rookie of the Year trophy for his excellent showing in his first year, averaging 258.5 yards per game.

Unlike most teams, the USF Bulls has yet to have a permanent rival as the team is still adjusting to its latest set-up with the Big East, and having to move from one conference to another didn't help. A few rivalry possibilty though with the West Virginia Mountaineers looms in the background when the Bulls gained probably one of its greatest victory since its inception, upsetting the #7 ranked WVU in 2006 that ended the Mountaineers chance of winning the Big East title and representing the league in the BCS Bowl game.
