The San Jose State Spartans represent the San Jose State University in NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision college football and plays under the Western Athletic Conference. San Jose State's football program made its debut in 1893 on a losing cause against San Jose YMCA. The team had to wait a few more years before getting its first ever win, an 18-0 trouncing of Pacific in 1898. Between 1893 and 1921, the Spartans remained in the independent scene before landing a spot with the California Coast Conference in 1922. SJSU's stay with the CCC was anything but pleasant as the team managed to win only 3 of 15 games. The team became independent again from 1925 through 1928 then joined the Northern California Athletic Conference in 1929. Although the Spartans only spent six seasons with the NCAC, the team made it worthwhile with a couple of shared conference titles, including an undefeated record (7-0-2) in the 1932 season. The team returned to the independent scene from 1935-38 then aligned with the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1939. The Spartans made a statement in its first three seasons with the CCAA with the team's three peat title reign from 1939-41, including a sweep of all of its games in 1939. The Spartans collected 29 victories against 4 losses and 3 draws in that span. But it was only the beginning of SJSU's success as in 1946, the team added another title after an impressive run, capped by the team's first Bowl Game appearance which was a win over Utah State (20-0 in the Raisin Bowl). In 1948 and '49, the Spartans turned out back-to-back championship titles, the team's 7th and 8th overall, before leaving CCAA to become independent the 4th time. It was a "quiet" stint in the 19 seasons of being independent for SJSU that spanned from 1950-68. In 1969, the team became a member of the Big West Conference and a couple years later, the team appeared in their 3rd Bowl Game, its first bowl game loss (bowed to Memphis 9-28 in the Pasadena Bowl). In its 27 seasons with the Big West, SJSU claimed eight conference titles, including five Bowl Games appearances. In 1996, the team was admitted into the Western Athletic Conference but has been struggling since, only turning out a couple of winning seasons, and a solitary Bowl Game appearance, a 2006 New Mexico Bowl victory over New Mexico.

As of 2006, the Spartans have claimed 16 conference titles, had played in 8 Bowl Games, and have won over 400 wins. The SJSU Spartans have a couple of rivals, one being Fresno State (Fresno State leads the series, 33-35-3) and the other being Mountain West's San Diego State (San Jose State leads the series, 17-15-2).

Highlights

In 2006, the San Jose State Spartans and the New Mexico Lobos clashed in the inaugural New Mexico Bowl. It was the first time in 16 years that the Spartans, led by Coach Tomey, played in a bowl game. SJSU was under a new program and the team's turnaround is obvious the past few years as the Spartans were able to win the most number of games since that SJSU team in 1990 that went on to win the California Bowl. The Spartans won the showdown with the Lobos to the tune of 20-12.
