The San Diego State Aztecs represent the San Diego State University (SDSU) in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision and plays under the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State's football program began play in 1921 with a victory over the Army-Navy Academy (6-0 score) and a 4-6-0 season record on its maiden year. San Diego State had 4 straight seasons with an above .500 winning mark while still an independent team, before joining the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1926. The Aztecs' first title came in back-to-back fashion, in 1936 when the team had a 6-1-1 season record, and in 1937 when the team had a 7-1-0 card. SDSU left the SCIAC for the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1939 but had a dismal year, winning only two games in 9 attempts. The Aztecs' first bowl game happened in New Year's Day of 1948, when the team was dominated by Hardin-Simmons in the Harbor Bowl (with the score of 0-53). A couple of years later, SDSU had another back-to-back conference championship, in 1950 and 1951 (the team's first undefeated season), under then coach Bill Schutte. The following season, the Aztecs had their first College Division Bowl Game, the Pineapple Bowl, with SDSU dominating Hawaii 34-13. SDSU momentarily disappeared in the title picture after that, but re-emerged in the 1960's (1962 in particular) with the team's third CCAA title and SDSU's fifth title overall. The football program reached its pinnacle in the mid 1960's with the team's first (1966, 11-0-0 record) and second (1967, 10-1-0 record) College Division national championships. On both occassions, the Aztecs also appeared in the Camellia Bowl, winning the first against Montana State and the second against the San Francisco State. As an independent team in 1968, SDSU finished the season with 9-wins, no loss, and a tie and was heralded by the United Press International as the College Division National Champions. From 1969 through 1975, SDSU was part of the Big West Conference and won the conference title in five occassions (1969, '70, '72, '73 and '74). The team returned momentarily in the independent scene from 1976-77 before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 1978. The team only a won a single championship in the WAC (1986) then joined the Mountain West Conference as a charter member in 1999.

SDSU has so far won 13 conference titles, 3 small college division national titles, and has appeared in a total of 9 Bowl Games (5 of them in the Division I-A). The Aztecs main rivals are the San Jose State Spartans (San Jose leads the series, 15-17-2).
