The Sacramento State Hornets' football program began play in 1954 when the team coached by Dave Strong went winless in 7 assignments. The team finally won one the following year when it defeated Southern Oregon by a point for its first and only victory of the 1955 season. Back then, the team was affiliated with the Northern California Athletic Conference where they would compete for thirty years. Within that span, Sacramento State was classified as an NCAA College Division program (1961-72) before making a transition to Division II play in 1973. In 1985, the team became a member of the Western Football Conference and after eight seasons, was aligned with the American West Conference during which time the school was elevated to Division I-AA. In 1996, a year after winning its lone AWC title, Sacramento State (along with Portland State) was taken in by the Big Sky Conference thus becoming the only school from California competing in that league.

The Hornets known rivals are the UC Davis Aggies, with the teams competing in a rivalry game named the Causeway Classic. The game is played for the Causeway Carriage, referring to the fact that the schools are connected by the long Yolo Causeway bridge over Yolo Bypass floodway.
