Appalachian State showed no remorse in disposing Division II team Lenoir-Rhyne, scoring a touchdown in each of its first five possessions enroute to a 48-7 massacre at the Kidd Brewer Stadium, Saturday.

App State coach Jerry Moore was overwhelmed by the show of support from the the Mountaineer fans who have already tailgated the stadium ticket booth more than six hours before kick-off.

"I'm going to tell you I was taken aback by it. They were sitting on top of that chicken wagon. They were in the trees. It was awesome thing," Moore said, referring to the fans who flocked in every possible empty space all over the stadium just to see their beloved Mountaineers in action.

The Kidd Brewer Stadium, with a capacity of 16,650 people, filled over 10,000 more in the grassy hill behind one end zone. The actual fan attendance was announced at 28,802.

The Mountaineers played minus starting QB Armanti Edwards, who sat the game out with a sore shoulder. In his place was senior back-up quarterback Trey Elder, who made his first start in nearly a year. Elder, who actually replaced Edwards early last season, spearheaded the App State attack with a career game highlighted by a total of 300 yards in offense, with 5 TDs in three quarters of play.

"We love playing here at home," Elder said. "I think we did a good job of preparing all week -- even with the distractions."

Elder completed 9-of-13 passes for 210 yards, including two of his four touchdown pass connections of 18 and 59 yards to Sports Illustrated cover boy Dexter Jackson. Elder's other two scoring passes were a 42 yard throw to Tavaris Washington and a 33-yard connection to tight end Nic Cardwell. The second-string QB also ran for 90 yards, three of those accounting for a touchdown score.

Julian Rauch's two 40-yard field goal scores and Devon Moore's 12-yard touchdown completed ASU's scoring barrage.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Andrew Courman prevented his team from being shut-out with a 5-yard touchdown, 44 seconds remaining in the contest. The Bears, also playing without its starting QB Justin Sanders, were led by backup Daniel Anderson who went 11-0f-19 for 80 yards. James Pone also contributed 90 yards rushing for L-R, which collected its second loss in as many games.

"We had our chance to be America's team, but I guess that stays with App," Lenoir-Rhyne coach Fred Goldsmith said. "Oregon might have broken that bubble today, but App is for real. Speed, speed, speed. And I hope they win the whole thing again."
