The Purdue Boilermakers represent Purdue University in NCAA's Division I-A collegiate football tourney under the Big 10 Conference. Purdue's football program began as an independent team in 1887 before finding a home with the Indiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association four years later. In 1896, Purdue became one of the founding Big Ten Conference members, but it took them twenty-three (23) years to finally earn their first ever Big Ten title (1918). The team went on to win the conference championship eight more times (1929, '31, '32, '43, '52, '67, '2000), and in 1931, had their first national championship selection (Parke Davis) when they finished that season with a 9-1 win-loss card. Aside from these titles, the Boilermakers have also appeared in 14 postseason Bowl Games (winning seven), have produced 19 All Americans, 11 College Football Hall of Fame Inductess, three Pro Football Hall of Famers, a number of current NFL players, and as of 2006, a winning percentage of 53.89% over-all.

Aside from the regular titles (conference, national, bowl), Purdue also goes after three special trophies which are handed out to the winner of the college football game between Purdue and its rivals. Purdue takes on Indiana University for the Old Oaken Bucket (one of the oldest trophy in the nation), then the University of Illinois for the Purdue Cannon, and finally, the University of Notre Dame for the Shillelagh Trophy. Purdue is also home to many renowned NFL quarterbacks which include Dale Samuels, Bob DeMoss, Bob Griese, Mike Phipps, Super Bowl MVP Len Dawson, Mark Herrmann, Jim Everett, Jeff George, Drew Brees, and Kyle Orton, hence the nickname "Cradle of Quarterbacks."
