The Princeton Tigers is an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team that represents Princeton University in the Ivy League. Princeton made its college football debut in 1869, splitting a two-game series with Rutgers (lost the first 4-6 and won the second 8-0) and was declared as CFBDW Recognized National Champions. The following year, Princeton continued to play without a coach but still managed to win another game over Rutgers, 6-2, and was awarded yet another national championship. Although Princeton missed the 1871 season, the trend continued in 1872-73 when the team beat both Rutgers and Yale enroute to the Tigers' 3rd and 4th national titles. By the end of the 19th century, Princeton has already established itself as multi-time champions with 17 national titles tucked under its belt. In 1901, Princeton, for the first time played with a coach in Biff Lea. In 1903, under Coach Doc Hillebrand, the Tigers swept all of its eleven games and was awarded with its 18th national title. A few years later, Bill Roper had an on-off coaching stint with Princeton but he nevertheless showed his coaching brilliance by leading his team to several championship seasons (1906, 1911, 1920, and 1922). Roper's 17-year and 133-game coaching tenure is the longest in Princeton football history. His .729 winning percentage is also the highest mark by any Princeton coach with a minimum of 80 wins. After a one season coaching stint by Albert Wittmer, Fritz Crisler coached the team in 1932 and led his team to thus far, the team's last two national championships in 1933 and 1935 after compiling 18 consecutive wins (with no losses).

Two decades later, Princeton became a charter member of the Ivy "athletic" League in 1956. The Tigers claimed its first Ivy League title in 1957 under Coach Dick Colman, Jr (who also led the team to several conference championships in the 1960's). The Tigers have won a total of nine conference titles in the Ivy League to add up to their national championships collection.

Princeton has a rivalry with another decorated football team, the Yale Bulldogs, which has been existing since 1873, making it the second oldest rivalry in American Football. Princeton currently trails Yale in the series, 49-70-10.
