Of the teams in the Big East, the University of Pittsburgh Panthers probably has the most storied history and probably is one of the most decorated teams in the conference. Participating in NCAA division I-A College football, Pittsburgh broke into the independent scene in 1890 and has had several fields as its home over the years. The original Pitt home turf was the Recreation Park, then at the Exposition Park (1900), the Forbes Field (1909), the Pitt Stadium (1925), the Three Rivers Stadium (2000), and at the Heinz Field since 2001. Unlike most of the notable college teams, Pittsburgh was not affiliated with any conference until 1991, when they joined the Big East Conference.

As a testament to its success, the team has won the national championship six times (1910,'15,'16,'18,'37,'76), the Conference title once (2004), and appeared in twenty-four (24) Bowl Games, winning 10 of them. The team has also been undefeated in 8 seasons (1904,'10,'15,'16,'17,'20,'37,'76) and had a one-loss season in 17 different occassions. Pitt is also home to 4 Pro Hall of Famers (Marino, Dorsett, Ditka, Schmidt), 24 College Football Hall of Fame inductees, and 242 NFL draftees with 86 All-Americans (as of 2006).
