Patrick Chung (born Patrick Christopher Chung on Aug. 19, 1987 in Kingston, Jamaica) plays safety for the Oregon Ducks in the NCAA college football tournament. In just his third season as a Duck, Chung compiled a total of 9.17 tackles average, with one pick off, one forced fumble, and two blocked kicks. The 5-foor-10, 210 pound defensive back has collected a total of 292 tackles, 16 tackles for losses, eight interceptions, 11 passes defensed, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks. This past season, the incoming senior had a total of 117 tackles (team-high) with two interceptions and seven pass deflections. Days after the Ducks defeated South Florida on the Sun Bowl, Chung declared his intentions to join the NFL draft, but later on withdrew his name from consideration to return for his final year at Oregon.

Personal Life

Patrick is the son of Ronald and Sophia Chung. He has seven siblings, four brothers and three sisters. He is a political science major at the University of Oregon. Patrick sports several tattooes on his body, including the name of his father "Ronald" on one arm and his mothers' name "Sophia" on the other. He also has the words Kingston and August on his right arm and his birthplace "Jamaica" and his birthdate "19, 1987" on his left arm.

High School

Chung attended Rancho Cucamonga HS and played under coach Chris VanDuyk. As a senior, Chung was a dual-threat who plays on both sides of the field, catching passes as a wideout and tackling opponents as a free safety. On his final year, Chung caught 9 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns on offense and registered 74 tackles on defense (no.2 in the team) as he helped the Cougars finish with a 7-4 record. Chung had eight or more tackles five times, including a season-high 12 vs. Alta Loma to go with his two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries enroute to being named to the all-Baseline League First Team twice. SuperPrep also rated him as one of the top 90 prospects in California.

College

2004

Redshirted. Chung was named as the scout team's defensive player of the week after helping his squad prepare for the Oklahoma game and was also honored for his efforts in the special teams in the games against Arizona and UCLA.

2005

In only his redshirt freshman year, Chung was already the team's second-leading tackler and top returnee posting team highs of 11 and 9 tackles against Washington and Washington State, respectively. In addition to earning the team's special teams player of the week against the Huskies, Chung also garnered the same accolade against USC after recording a collegiate-best 12 tackles against the Trojans, then later on matching the 12 tackles against Oklahoma in his postseason debut. He also had a couple of interceptions (Washington and Arizona games), one forced fumble, and returned 2 kickoffs for 34 yards. By the end of the regular season, Chung was honored with several postseason awards that include a spot at The Sporting News' and Rivals.com's First Team Freshman All-America while bagging the team's Len Casanova Award as the program’s top newcomer.

2006

By his sophomore year, Patrick has already emerged as a fixture in the Duck defense as the team's third-leading tackler, and second in both quarterback sacks and interceptions in 13 starts. Chung posted twin-digit tackles in three separate occassions, including his season high 11 against California and Washington State. He also posted four interceptions (Fresno State, UCLA, Washington, and BYU) and a fumble recovery against Oregon State. As part of the special teams, Chung successfully made his first punt return on a 59-yard touchdown against Washington where he won the team’s special teams player-of-the-game before closing the season out with a 12.1 yard average on 170 yards and 14 attempts. He ended his sophomore year with 84 tackles (49 solo, 35 assisted), 2 sacks, a pass break-up, and another honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors for the second straight year.

2007

Chung was due for a breakout year with promising performances the past two seasons. In the season opener against Houston, Chung tallied 8 tackles (2 solo, 6 assisted), with 1 interception, a pass break-up, and had a kick blocked as he helped the Ducks claim win number 1 over the Cougars. He had his first double digit tackle performance some weeks later against Fresno State with 11 (7 solo, 4 assisted) and had three more games with 13 or more tackles, including a season-high 15 in a win against Arizona State (11 solo, 4 assisted). He ended the season with a total of team high 117 tackles (71 solo, 46 assisted), with 7.5 tackles for 17 yards loss, 2 interceptions, 7 passes broken up, 1 forced fumble, and 2 kicks/punts blocked. The AP, Phil Steele, and Scout.com All-American selection also returned 2 punts for 10 yards and had 9 kickoff returns for 201 yards with a 22.33 average enroute to winning the school's Gordon E. Wilson Award for the outstanding special teams player.
