Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will not be suiting up in Saturday's game against Ohio to recover from the injury he sustained in the season-opening win over Youngstown State.
Wells, who hurt the base of his right big toe and is wearing a protective boot, did not practice with the team this week. OSU head coach Jim Tressel said it was risky to play him against Ohio since he was unable to practice with the team.
"Beanie won't go this week," Tressel said Thursday afternoon. "I feel good about his progress, but it wasn't enough progress to practice through yesterday."
He added that Wells should be ready for the anticipated match-up against top-ranked USC on Sept. 13. He said he wasn't worried that Wells will not be able to play in that game.
"Not at all, not at all," Tressel said. "It's easy to say that today, but I feel good about his progress."
In Beanie's absence, Maurice Wells will be taking over the starting spot with Dan Herron and Brandon Saine sharing the rushing load with him. The Buckeye coaches are trying to give the trio a dozen carries each.
