The Northwestern Wildcats, representing the Northwestern University in NCAA's Division I-A college football tournament, is the only private school affiliated with the Big Ten Conference. A founding member of the Big Ten, Northwestern's football program started back in 1882 as an independent team. The school didn't have a football team from 1883 to '85, in 1887, and from 1906 to '07. As a member of the Big 10, the Wildcats had their first taste of success in 1903 as the team won its first ever Big 10 title. The Wildcats won this title four more times in three decades, the last of which happened in 1936 when the team achieved an all-time high rank of #1. Although the school duplicated their #1 status in the rankings in 1962, the Wildcats didn't have the same amount of success in the field since their last postseason Bowl game victory over California in 1948. Adding to the woes of the school's football program is their record-setting 34-game losing streak which spanned from 1979 through 1982, only broken by their win over Northern Illinois University. Aside from this, the team currently holds the all-time records for Division I-A losses, points allowed, and negative point differential (amount opponents have outscored them by). In 2006, Northwestern is also on the bad end of another record-setting game as the team squandered a 35 point third quarter lead to lose by 3 to Michigan State in October 21.
Despite Northwestern U's unsuccessful run in the field (partly due to the students' talent level which is said to be less than those found in larger public schools), the school has had a significant amount of success in the classroom as the school is consistently among the leaders in graduation rate (100% in 1998 and 2002, and consistently is in the 90th percentile). The Wildcats have thus far compiled 8 Conference titles, one national championship selection, and appeared in 6 postseason Bowl games, winning once.
