The North Texas Mean Green represents the University of North Texas in the Sun Belt Conference of the NCAA's Division I-Bowl Subdivision. The North Texas football squad started its campaign in 1913 as an independent team, losing its first game to Texas Christian via shut-out. North Texas was admitted into the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1925 through 1930 then with the Lone Star Conference from 1931 through 1948. North Texas captured its first ever title a year after joining the LSC, finishing the season with an 8-1-1 record under Coach Jack Sisco. The team claimed a total of eight conference titles in the LSC, including back-to-back titles in three occassions (1935-36, 1939-40-41, and 1946-47). North Texas' first Bowl Game (College Division) took place in 1946, with the Mean Green defeating Pacific, 14-13 in the Optimist Bowl. The team had another postseason Bowl Game (Division I-A) the following season in the Salad Bowl, unfortunately losing to Nevada, 6-13. The team left LSC in 1949 for the Gulf Coast Conference where the team established itself as perennial title contenders. Led by Coach Odus Mitchell, the Mean Green made a mean run in the GCC with a three-peat Gulf Coast Conference championship (1950, '51, and '52, undefeated in conference play on those seasons). North Texas added another pair of GCC titles in 1955 and '56 before leaving for the Missouri Valley Conference in 1957. North Texas spent 18 seasons in the MVC, winning the MVC championship in five occassions (1958, '59, '66, '67, '73) and appearing in one Bowl Game (1959 Sun Bowl) in that span. After the school was reclassified into Division I in 1973, then into Division I-A in 1978, then once again as Division I-AA in 1982, North Texas joined the Southland Conference in 1983 and wasted little time by capturing a share of the Southland Conference title in its debut with its new home. North Texas spent 12 seasons in Southland, a year as independent (when North Texas was reclassified into Division I-A school), five seasons in the Big West Conference, before its latest stopover with the Sun Belt Conference in 2001.

The Mean Green cemented its place in Sun Belt as one of the title contenders in the conference by capturing four straight SBC titles, from 2001-04. During that era, the Mean Green also appeared in four straight New Orleans Bowl Games, but won only once. As of 2006, North Texas has claimed 24 conference titles, played in seven Bowl Games, and has won 52.7% of their games since the football program's inception.
