Nick Reed (born Nicholas Matthew Reed on Sept. 1, 1987 in Oakland, Calif.) is a defensive lineman playing the defensive end position for the University of Oregon Ducks in the NCAA college football tournament. A heralded player in high school, Reed only showed his true potential during his junior year when he piled up his tackles for loss numbers and hounded quarterbacks all over the nation with his league-leading sack tally. Reed has always been a determined pass rusher during his prep years and with his speed, strength and quickness, he continues to be one on the collegiate level as he became the main reason why Oregon placed highly in the national rankings in terms of TFLs.

Personal Life

Nick is the son of Pat McLoughlin and Kathy Reed. He also has two sisters. He is a history major at the University of Oregon.

High School

Reed studied high school at Mission Viejo in Mission Viejo, California where he played football for head coach Bob Johnson and alongside USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. During his senior year, Reed helped the Diablos defeat Valencia to win the CIF-Southern Section Division II finale and end the year as the top ranked prep football team in California and one of the best in the country. He finished 2004 recording 65 tackles, 10 quarterback sacks (third in the league) and two fumble recoveries to earn The OC Register Defensive Player of the Year in the Orange County, the CIF Southern Section Division II co-defensive player of the year, and the South Coast League defensive MVP awards. In terms of team recognitions, Reed was named an all-Orange County Region by the L.A. Times, a first-team all-CIF Southern Section, and an all-region pick by PrepStar Magazine. He was also included in the Long Beach Press-Telegram’s “Best in the West” list.

College

Reed, a three-star recruit, received scholarship offers from Oregon, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, and Wisconsin. Recruited by Oregon defensive backs coach John Neal, he eventually committed to Oregon over Oregon State.

2005

As a true freshman, Reed earned playing minutes as a back-up to the likes of Devan Long and Darius Sanders. He made his collegiate debut at Houston but did not make his first career tackles until the following week after recording two stops with 1 TFL in the lopsided victory over Montana. At Stanford, Reed had his first career sack, an 8-yarder, in the 24-point win. At Arizona State, he registered his first punt block and recovered it at the ASU 1 as the Ducks defeated the Sun Devils, 31-17. He also appeared in 25 snaps and recovered Aaron Gipson's blocked punt at Arizona in the 28-21 win, then recorded a stop each in wins against Washington State and Oregon State to end the season.

2006

During the annual spring game, Reed had five stops, including four for losses and three sacks for a 17 yard loss to help the Green team defeat White, 26-17. Reed began the year as back-up to Sanders and Matt Toeaina at the defensive end spot. In his season debut at Stanford, he tallied a pair of stops including a 3-yard sack in the 48-10 victory. He did not play against Fresno State then returned against Oklahoma to tally a pair of tackles in Oregon's 1-point victory over the Sooners. With injuries on the Oregon line, Reed had his first career start against ASU where he had a pair of solos in the 48-13 win. He kept the starting the job throughout the rest of the season beginning with the Ducks' first setback of the season where he had 3 stops at Cal. Against UCLA, he only had a solo tackle for a 9-yard loss but hurried the opposing QB in the 10-point win. At Washington State, he made crucial defensive stops---three tackles, a QB hurry and a punt block---unfortunately it wasn't enough to derail the Cougars as Oregon lost, 23-34. Against Portland State, he made a pair of tackles, including a 5-yard sack as the Ducks won by 43 points. He also had three tackles each in losses to USC and Arizona then recorded a season high five stops in the regular season finale at Oregon State. In his second straight bowl game appearance, Reed tallied four stops with a 2-yard sack in the 30-point defeat to BYU. Reed ended the season as the team's second-leading tackler among down linemen (ninth overall) and was named as the team's defensive player of the week twice in addition to being recognized as a second team academic all-conference.

2007

Reed only had two tackles but had a 14-yard sack for the winning Green squad in the annual spring game. Entering his junior year, Reed was one of Oregon's leading tacklers returning on the defensive line. He made his season debut with a start against Houston, chipping in two stops including an 11-yard sack in the three-touchdown victory. He matched his career high with five tackles the following week against Michigan, before chipping in three tackles a piece and a sack each in victories against Fresno State and at Stanford. Against Cal, Reed sacked a QB for the third straight game, unfortunately the Ducks came up short, 24-31. Against Washington State, Reed had a career game after setting a new career high with 11 stops including a personal best 3.5 sacks for a whooping 44 yards loss as Oregon dismantled the Cougars, 53-7. His performance won him the Pacific-10 Conference and Walter Camp Football Foundation national defensive player of the week awards and had him included in the Ted Hedricks Award Watch List. He also contributed three assisted tackles in the win at Washington but saw his streak of games with a TFL snapped the following week when he contributed four stops (without losses) as the 5th ranked Ducks defeated the 9th ranked Trojans. Against No.6 Arizona State, Reed matched his career high in tackles (11), TFLs (5.0) and sacks (3.5) with 1 QB hurry to help his team escape with a 35-23 win and once again earn Pac-10 player of the week honors. He also received Academic All-District 8 first team accolades from ESPN The Magazine after being able to maintain a 3.39 gpa in history.

Against an unranked Arizona team, the Ducks succumbed to an upset defeat with Reed limited to a tackle. In the shut-out loss to the Bruins, he managed to produce six stops including an 8-yard sack then in the regular season ending defeat to Oregon State, he was able to register 9 stops and a pair of QB hurries. He had a fumble recovery in his third consecutive bowl game as Oregon defeated South Florida in the Sun Bowl which stopped the Ducks' three game slide. Reed finished the season as the conference's leader in sacks (12.0) and TFLs (22.5) to earn All-American honors from SI.com and first team All-Pac-10 accolades.

2008

In the spring game, Reed was credited with three stops and a 3-yard sack as his White team won, 36-3. He is hyped to anchor Oregon's D-line as one of seven returning starters on defense. He was also named into the watch lists of the Nagurski, Lott, and Hendricks awards.
