The New Mexico State Aggies football team represent the New Mexico State University in NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football and plays under the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies made their debut with a 10-0 victory over Las Cruces in 1893. The team spent over three decades in the independent scene before joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931. Under Coach Gerald Hines, New Mexico State appeared in their first ever Bowl Game in the 1936 New Year's Day edition of the Sun Bowl (game versus Hardin-Simmons ended in a draw, 14-14). NMSU followed up to their success the following year with a share of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, with a 4-1-0 conference record and 7-2-0 overall. The team waited another 22 years for its second BIAA title, with a sweep of all of its 11 assignments that include the 20-13 conquest of Utah State in the Sun Bowl in 1960. Previous to that year, NMSU clobbered North Texas for the team's first ever Bowl Game victory, 28-8, also in the Sun Bowl. NMSU returned to the independent scene for another 8 years, then joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1971. Two of the highlights for the Aggies in their stint with the MVC are their 3rd and 4th conference championships that happened in 1976 and 1978, finishing with a 2-1-1 and 5-1-0 record respectively ('76 squad was led by Jim Bradley while the '78 team by Gil Krueger). The 1970's signalled the last of the glory days for NMSU as the team has been on a slump since with consecutive losing seasons and several record-book appearances for longest losing streaks in Division I-A football. From 1983-2000, NMSU was aligned with the Big West Conference, then from 2001-2004 with the Sun Belt Conference, before finally landing a spot with the Western Athletic Conference in 2005.

As of 2006, the Aggies have 4 conference championships under its belt, and three Bowl Game appearances with a 2-0-1 record. New Mexico State also has a couple of several non-conference rivals, namely the New Mexico Lobos of the Mountain West and the UTEP Miners of Conference USA. The Aggies and Lobos fight for The Maloof Trophy (Lobos lead the series, 28-64-5) while the Aggies and the Miners battle for The Silver Spade (Miners lead the series, 33-49-2).
