The New Mexico Lobos football squad is the interscholastic football team of the University of New Mexico, playing in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision under the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico started out as an independent team in 1892, and was coachless in its first season of play when the team lost twice to Albuquerque HS, both via shut-out. The Lobos got their rematch with Albuquerque HS in its first game of 1893, returning the favor to their opponents to the score of 4-0. New Mexico improved in the standings that season with a 3-win, 1-loss record. The Lobos had their first coach in 1894 with W.A. Zimmer and finished that season with an even 1-1-1 win-loss-tie record. The team remained independent until 1930, before joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931. The team had an inconsistent start in its first few years with the BIAA, its breakout season coming in 1938. The Lobos had a 4-2-0 record in conference play and 8-3-0 overall to gain a share of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship, New Mexico's first ever title. Later that season, New Mexico appeared in its first Bowl Game, the Sun Bowl, but came out on the losing end, bowing to Utah via shut-out. The Lobos would get another shot in the Sun Bowl Game in the 1943 season, but was defeated by Southwestern. New Mexico's third shot at the Sun Bowl was a charm as the team finally won its first bowl game in 1946 defeating Denver, 34-24. The Lobos had their final bowl game appearance at BIAA in 1947 in the Harbor Bowl (game finished in a draw) before joining the Mountain States Conference in 1951. New Mexico's stint with the MSC lasted only 11 seasons, as in 1962, the Lobos was admitted into the Western Athletic Conference. Coach Bill Weeks piloted New Mexico into a three-peat conference championship in the team's first three years with the WAC. The team was elevated into a Division I-A school on 1978. The Lobos last championship in the WAC was the Mountain Division title which the team won in 1997 with a 6-2-0 record. In 1999, New Mexico left WAC to become one of the 8 charter members of the Mountain West Conference.

As of 2006, the Lobos have won 4 conference titles, 1 division title, and have appeared in ten postseason bowl games, including four in the last five years from 2002 through 2006. New Mexico has existing rivalries with several teams; with the Utah Utes (rivalry game is called The Bowl), the New Mexico State Aggies (rivalry game is called the Battle of I-25 and the trophy is the Maloof Trophy); with the Arizona Wildcats (teams battle for the Kit Carson Rifle); and finally with the UTEP Miners (rivalry game is called the Rio Grande Championship).
