The Nevada Wolf Pack is an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football team, representing the University of Nevada, Reno (Nevada or UNR) and currently plays under the Western Athletic Conference. Nevada's football program was established in the late 1800's and officially debuted in 1896 with a shut-out victory over Wadsworth AC, 30-0. The team spent 29 seasons playing as independent before landing a spot with the Northern California Athletic Conference in 1925. The Wolf Pack claimed its first title in 1932 with a share of the NCAC championship. Nevada won two more NCAC titles in 1933 and '39 then left to become independent a second time in 1940. The team had back-to-back Bowl Game appearances in 1948 and 1949, winning the first over North Texas in the Salad Bowl then losing the other to Villanova in the Harbor Bowl. The team rejoined the NCAC in 1954 but couldn't regain the winning form that netted them several championships on its first tour of duty. After a lackluster return in the NCAC, Nevada spent some time back in the independent scene, even as the school was reclassified into Division II from 1973 to '77, and into Division I-AA in 1978. Nevada then joined the Big Sky Conference from 1979 through 1991, where the team claimed four Big Sky titles in 1983, '86, '90, and '91. In 1992, Nevada joined the Big West and made quite an impression on its debut with its new home with a Big West title as well as a Bowl Game appearance, the team's first in 43 years (losing to Bowling Green in the Las Vegas Bowl). But the Wolf Pack were just getting started as two years later, Nevada completed a four-peat conference title reign from 1994-97, three of those titles shared. The team won 32 of 46 games in that span, with two Bowl Game appearances both played in the Las Vegas Bowl. The team joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2000 and won their 13th conference title, the WAC championship, five years later. The Wolf Pack also had played in back-to-back Bowl Games in 2005 and 2006, the former a win over Central Florida in the Hawaii Bowl while the latter a defeat to Miami in the MPC Computers Bowl.

As of 2006, the Wolf Pack has captured 13 conference titles, and has won 3 out of their seven Bowl Game appearances. Aside from the traditional titles, Nevada also goes after the annual Fremont Cannon (trophy) which is awarded to the winner of the Battle for Nevada game between the Wolfpack and the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. As of 2006, Nevada leads the series 17-15. Nevada also has two other rivals, namely Boise State and Fresno State.
