The Navy Midshipmen is a Division I-A independent football program currently competing in the NCAA's collegiate football tournament representing the United States Naval Academy (Navy for short). Eversince the school's football program was established in 1879, the team has always been unaffiliated with any conference. Navy's football program has been quite a success most especially in its earlier years as to date, there have been 19 players and 3 coaches inducteed in the College Football Hall of Fame. The team reached the highest point in 1926 when they were nominated for the National Championship, finishing their season with a 9-0-1 win-loss-tie record. Navy actually shared the "National Championship" honors to two more undefeated squads that year, Alabama (9-0-1 record) and Stanford (10-0-1 record). Navy has also appeared in thirteen postseason Bowl Games, doing a 6 win-6 loss-1 draw record. Two Midshipmen have received the Heisman Trophy in the past (Bellino in 1960 and Staubach in 1963) while four garnered the Maxwell Award (Beagle in 1954, Reifsnyder in '57, Bellino in '60 and Staubach in '63).

Aside from the national title and several bowling championships, the Midshipmen also covets the Commander in Chief's Trophy; an award that is to be disputed and handed out to the winner of the triangular college football series that includes Navy's traditional rivals - the Army Black Knights and the Air Force Falcons. So far, the Navy had possession of the trophy in 9 separate occassions (1973, '75, '78, '79, 81, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006). Aside from the Knights and the Falcons, the Midshipmen's other known rivals are Notre Dame (long-time rival since 1927) and Maryland (the intrastate rivalry referred to as the Crab Bowl).
