North Carolina State junior tailback Toney Baker will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in the Wolfpack's 23-25 loss to UCF last Saturday. A cartilage damage was discovered by Dr. Michael Fajgenbaum during arthroscopic surgery last Sunday.
Baker, Wolfpack's leading rusher last season, will undergo reconstructive surgery at a later date.
"This is a tough situation for Toney and for our football team," said first-year head coach Tom O'Brien. "We wish him the best and will support him through his rehabilitation period."
N.C. State will miss Baker's rushing prowess, whose 57.3 yards per game last year ranked 10th in the ACC. He has also started 12 times and has rushed for 1,272 yards in his career, which spans 24 games. Baker was also named to the preseason 'watch' list for the 2007 Doak Walker Award last week.
Baker has not taken a redshirt season and the school said he could be eligible for a medical redshirt.
