The University of Mississippi fields in the Mississippi Rebels (formerly known as Mississippi Flood) in the NCAA Division I-A collegiate football tournament, under the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. The Ole Miss football program began as early as 1890, when Dr. A.L. Bondurant initiated the formation of an Athletic Association in the interests of football, baseball and tennis. By 1893, the football team was already up and running with Dr. Bondurant serving as the manager-coach. Ole Miss immediately made an impact right on the inaugural game in November 1893 with a 56-0 drubbing of the Southwest Baptist University of Jackson, Tenn. LSU finished their debut season winning 4 of their 5 games. After over four decades of ups and downs, the team finally had a significant achievement, making their first postseason bowl game appearance via the Orange Bowl in 1935 which they eventually lost. This same year was the time the "Flood" nickname was replaced with the "Rebels." The next time Ole Miss appeared in a postseason bowl game was much more memorable than the first as the team led by Coach John Vaught finished the season with a 9-2 card and a Southeastern conference championship in 1947. Aside from claiming the Delta Bowl over Texas Christian that year, Ole Miss also had their first Heisman nominee in Charlie Conerly who eventually placed fourth in the voting. Coach Vaught's arrival was just the beginning of bigger things for the Rebels as the team made quite a progress most notably during the 1955 season, when the team won 10 out of 11 of its games and was selected by the Massey Ratings as the national champions. Ole Miss repeated the feat in 1959 with the same record, only this time more than one organization selected them as the national champs, including Berryman, Sagarin Ratings, the Dunkel System, among others. The trend continued in 1960 as the Rebels outdid themselves, this time with an undefeated record (10-0-1) and a national championship selection by six polling organizations. 1962 was the last time in the Vaught era that the team was recognized as national champs (selected by Litkenhous and finished the season with a 10-0 card).

The team may have been out of the championship picture after the Vaught era but they continue to appear in several post season bowl games. As of 2006, Ole Miss has registered a little under 600 wins, that goes with their 6 Southeastern conference titles. Ole Miss' existing rivalries are with the LSU, which is called "A Southern Tradition," and with Mississippi State, referred to as the Egg Bowl. Winner of the Egg Bowl gets the Golden Egg Trophy.
