Michigan State University's Spartans compete in NCAA's Division I-A collegiate football under the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State's football program was first played as a club sport in 1884 before gaining varsity status in 1896. Since that year until 1906, the team played under the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and was conference champs in 1903 and '05. After its stint with MIAA, the team played in the independent scene up until the early 1950's when the team surged back into success. The Spartans went undefeated and untied in two successive years, in 1951 (finished as co-national champs with Tennessee) and 1952 (named undisputed national champions in every official poll). The team also recorded the nation's longest winning streak of 24 games in 1952. It was after these successive runs that Michigan State was finally admitted in the Big 10.

The Spartans have won 6 Big 10 National titles thus far, a total of 5 other national championship selections, Seven Postseason Bowl Game Victories in 17 appearances, and is home to 73 All-Americans. In addition, the Michigan State Spartans have also registered the biggest comeback in NCAA history, turning around a 3-38 3rd quarter deficit into a 41-38 conquest of the Northwestern Wildcats.
