The Miami RedHawks football team is an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football team that represents the Miami University in the Mid-American Conference. Miami-Ohio's football program got underway in 1888 with a scoreless draw in December 8 on the team's first ever game against Cincinnati. Still as an independent team without a coach, the Redhawks managed to sweep all of its games the following year, averaging 25 points while allowing only a point per game to their opponents. In 1910, the team became part of the Ohio Athletic Conference, where the team would claim its first conference title six years later. The Redhawks finished the 1916 and the 1917 seasons without a loss (6-0-1 in 1916 and 5-0-1 in 1917) to become back-to-back OAC champions. The team was also affiliated with the Buckeye Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1925 while still a member of the OAC. Miami eventually parted ways with OAC in 1927 with 4 conference titles in its bag. Miami's fifth and sixth championship came in the form of the BIAA title in 1932 and 1933. After the team's 7th conference title in 1936, Miami left the BIAA a couple years later to become independent once more. The team spent only 8 seasons in the independent scene before being admitted into the Mid-American Athletic Conference in 1947. The Redhawks' first season in the MAC was a success, turning out an undefeated record (the team's first since 1921). The following season though was far more special for the team, winning its first MAC title and appearing its first postseason Bowl Game (defeated Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl). Miami has thus far claimed 14 conference championships in the MAC, and has won a couple of MAC East division titles. The team has also played in a total of 9 Bowl Games (8 with the Division I-A, and 1 with the College Division), winning six of them.

Miami has had countless battles with its long-time nemesis, the Cincinnati Bearcats. In fact the teams' first meeting in 1888 was the first collegiate game played in the state of Ohio and ended in a draw. The Redhawks has the edge over the Bearcats, 59-45-7. The rivalry is tagged as the oldest non-conference college football rivalry in the United States. The winner of the rivalry game gets possession of the Victory Bell (traveling trophy). Miami's other rival is the Ohio University, whom the team has played in 83 games and has beaten in 51 occassions.
