The Memphis Tigers represent the University of Memphis in NCAA's Division I-A college football tournament, playing for the East Division of Conference USA. Memphis' football program started operating in the early 1900's as an independent team. Sixteen years later, the squad found themselves a home with the Mississippi Valley Conference. They played in MVC from 1928 through 1934, capturing back-to-back conference championships in 1929 and '30. After MVC, the Tigers joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1935 through 1941, winning the conference title in 1938. The team returned in the independent scene in 1942 before being affiliated with the Missouri Valley Conference from '68 to '73 where the team added three more conference titles to the their collection ('68,'69,'71).

A founding member of Conference USA in 1995, Memphis has been on a title drought since their last championship in 1971. The Tigers also have only appeared in four postseason Bowl games, winning three and is currently ranked 87th in terms of all-time winning percentage (48.81%). But despite of this, Memphis is considered to be a serious threat amidst the Conference USA contenders.
