The McNeese State Cowboys football team represents the McNeese State University in the NCAA's college football tournament, and currently plays in the Southland Conference of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. McNeese spent its first two seasons as an independent team (1950-51) and made its debut on September 22, 1950 with a win over Tulane Freshmen, 28-20. The following year, McNeese improved to 5-4-1 in the standings from a 5-5-0 record the previous year to earn a spot at the Cosmopolitan Bowl. The Cowboys went on to win its first Bowl Game, defeating Louisiana College, 13-6. In 1952, McNeese joined the Gulf States Conference and under Coach Les DeVall, the team's third coach in eight years, claimed their first title---the Gulf States Conference Championship (shared)---after finishing the season with a conference best 4-1-0 record. McNeese won the same title four times in the 1960's, three under Les DeVall and the last under Jim Clark. The team also appeared in its second Bowl Game in 1962, defeating Samford in the Golden Isles Bowl, 21-14. McNeese left GSC to become independent for the second time in 1971, before joining the Southland Conference in 1972. The team tasted the Southland Championship for the first time in 1976, after Jack Doland led to the team to a share of a conference best 4-1-0 record, and 10-2-0 overall (the team's first recorded double digit win since its inception). In 1979, Ernie Duplechin took over as head coach and led his team to back-to-back Southland championships after sweeping their conference assignments in both seasons (10-0-0 total in two years). The team also appeared in Bowl Games in those two seasons, unfortunately losing both Independent Bowl games to Syracuse (7-31) and to Southern Miss (14-16). The team had a momentary title drought in the 1980's but was able to regain their championship form in the 1990's under Coach Bobby Keasler, with four Southland titles in eight years (1991, '93, '95, '97). In 2000, McNeese tapped the services of Coach Tommy Tate and in just a year, transformed his Cowboys into perennial contenders with three straight conference championships and winning 31 of their 39 games in the 2001-03 seasons. Coach Matt Viator took over Coach Tate's spot in 2006 but the Cowboys were still able to snag the Southland Championship that year.

As of 2006, the Cowboys have won approximately 62% of their games since the program started. McNeese has also won 16 conference titles, with 6 total Bowl Games. McNeese have also been consistently ranked in the Final Division I-AA Polls, and will enter the 2007 season ranked #10 and #12 in the Sports Network and AGS FCS Preseason rankings, respectively.
