The University of Massachusetts Amherst is represented by the UMass Minutemen in the NCAA college football tournament, currently affiliated with the Football Championship Subdivision's Colonial Athletic Association. Massachusetts' football program got underway in 1879, managing to win one over Amherst Freshmen, 4-0, despite playing without a coach. UMass continued to play coachless until after the 1897 season, when Doctor Weeks took over the head coaching position. The team however went under several coaching changes through the years, but more often during the early stages of the program. One coach who will stand out in the UMass football history will be Vic Fusia, who in 1963, was able tp lead the team an undefeated season, the Minutemen's first since going 2-0-0 in 1889. Fusia's efforts gave UMass its first ever championship with an overall record of 8-0-1. The Minutemen even duplicated this feat the following year, this time with an 8-2-0 record after the season including a loss in the Tangerine Bowl to East Carolina, 13-14, which was suppossedly the team's first Bowl Game appearance. Fusia's 10 year stint with UMass produced 93 wins and five conference titles (1963-'64, '66-'67. 69). Fusia's departure after the 1970 season didn't hamper UMass' championship bid, as in 1971-72, Coach Dick MacPherson strung up the Minutemen's 6th and 7th conference titles. UMass also appeared in the 1972 Boardwalk Bowl, where the team defeated California-Davis, 35-14, to claim its first Bowl Game victory. MacPherson added a couple more championships in 1974 and '77 before Bob Pickett took over in 1978. Pickett continued UMass' title run, winning 4 titles in 5 years (1978-79, 1981-'82). In 1998, UMass made history by winning the Division I-AA national title after finishing the year with a 12-3-0 record. In 2007, UMass becomes one of the charter member of the CAA, after the A10 folded up due to the lack of active members.

As of 2006, UMass has tallied over 500 wins and approximately 51% winning clip. The Minutemen have also won two national titles (one recognized), with 19 conference titles, 2 Division championships, and three Bowl Game appearances (2-1-0). The team also have a rivalry with New Hampshire, where the winner will get the Billy Knight Trophy. UMass leads the series, 41-25-3 over the Wildcats.
