Marlon Lucky (born February 28, 1986) plays running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the NCAA college football tournament. Lucky, an I-back, reached the school record books during his junior year, manufacturing 1,743 all-purpose yards which stands as the seventh-most in school history in terms of single-season total and the best production since 1997. That yardage included 1,019 yards from the ground, which is registered as the 28th 1,000-yard rushing season in Nebraska history. The 6-foot, 210-pound North Hollywood, California native also contributed in the Huskers' air attack, with 75 catches for 705 yards and 3 TD receptions.

[edit] Personal Life

Marlon spent his early years in Dallas before moving to North Hollywood, California after seventh grade where his uncle Stanley Joseph and guardian Wayne Padden reside. Academically, Marlon is a sociology major at the University of Nebraska and for his efforts, was named to the 2007 Big 12 Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll. When not on the field and school, Marlon has volunteered some of his time with the Read to Succeed Book Drive and NU’s team hospital visits. In February of 2007, Marlon was hospitalized at the BryanLGH West hospital and spent some time at the ICU after an undisclosed incident happened at his residence. Prior to the 2007-08 season, Marlon sustained a tweaked muscle during the spring game but was able to recover in time for the season-opener.

[edit] High School

Lucky attended North Hollywood High School where aside from playing football, was also a four-year letterwinner in track. Playing under head coach Brad Ratcliffe, he rushed for 1,778 yards and 28 touchdowns with two touchdown receptions as a junior. The following year, he amassed 2,036 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns on 222 carries while also catching 23 passes for 443 yards and 6 touchdown receptions. He ended his three-year high school stint with 4,881 rushing yards and 81 touchdowns enroute to being named as the most valuable player in his league and a first-team CalHi Sports all-state selection. Lucky was also selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio where he rushed for a score in the second half. The athletic Los Angeles native, who was named by USA Today into its second team All-America selection, graduated as one of the highly touted and most sought after backs in the nation, with Rivals.com ranking him as the no.2 back in the country and the no.2 player in California.

[edit] College

Lucky was also offered scholarships by other teams outside Nebraska, most notably USC and Washington.

[edit] 2005

Coming out of a highly successful high school career, Lucky was faced with enormous expectations but unfortunately failed to live up to the hype. He managed to earn playing time, seeing action in all 12 outings and one of the 13 true freshmen to see action that season. Lucky came off the bench as a backup to Cory Ross but also saw some action with the Huskers' special teams unit. He first saw action against Maine, posting season highs in carries (13) and rushing yards (44) in a 25-7 victory. He made his first bowl game appearance against Michigan in the MasterCard Alamo Bowl, rushing once for 3 yards. He went on to finish the season with only 43 carries for 129 yards and averaged 20.9 yards on 15 returns. He also had a season-long 57-yard return at Kansas, including a 100-yard kickoff return that was nullified by a penalty.

[edit] 2006

After a dismal rookie season, Lucky was able to redeem himself with a better sophomore season as part of Nebraska's four-man I-back committee that totaled more than 2,400 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. He made his season debut against Louisiana Tech where he rushed 13 times for 79 yards and his first career touchdown. The following week, Lucky broke the century mark in rush yards with 103 on 18 carries and his second career touchdown against Nicholls State. On Week 4, Lucky led the Huskers to a 56-0 shutout of Troy, rushing 10 times for 156 yards with three touchdowns (34, 45 and 51) and a 15.6 yards per carry average (best for a Nebraska player with at least 10 carries in a game since the 1995) to earn for himself the Big 12 Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors. A month later, Lucky threw his first career touchdown pass and the first of only two attempts that season, a 25-yarder to Nate Swift, in a close 20-22 loss to Texas. He capped the season with his second straight postseason appearance in a loss to Auburn at the Cotton Bowl where he established a career high in carries with 25 for 88 yards to go along with 6 catches for 67 yards.

He topped his rookie season stats with a total of 141 carries for 728 yards and 6 TDs with 32 receptions for 383 yards with several postseason accolades to boot that include a Second Team All-Big 12 Selection from several publications (AP, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express News) and Honorable Selection All-Big 12 honors from the League coaches.

[edit] 2007

After sustaining an injury in the offseason, Lucky was able to recover in time for the season-opener against Nevada, tallying career-best in carries (30), rushing yards (233, first career 200-yard game), and a season-high 3 TD runs with 3 catches for 33 yards and a touchdown reception against the Wolfpack. He posted four other 100-yard games against Ball State (102), Iowa State (107), Texas (111), and Kansas State (103) and had two other 100-yard receiving games against Texas A&M (125) and Colorado (115). He tallied twin-digit carries in ten of 12 games and caught atleast a pass in all 12 outings. He also scored a touchdown in six out of the 12 games.

He finished the year with 206 carries for 1,019 yards and 9 rushing TDs and caught 75 passes (school-record, most by and RB in the nation) for 705 receiving yards (5th-most in school history) and 3 TDs. Lucky was recognized by the league coaches as a second-team selection.
