Marcus Barnett (Born March 8, 1988) plays wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bearcats in the NCAA college football tournament. Scouting reports point to the skinny wideout's speed and his ability to snatch the ball at his peak as his greatest assets on the field. In his first tour of duty as a Bearcat, Barnett emerged as one of the favorite receiving targets on offense, catching 62 passes for 862 yards with an average of 66.3 yards per game. The Upper Marlboro, MD native also made it to the Cincy record books as his team-leading 13 receiving touchdowns broke the 12 scoring catches recorded by Jim O'Brien in 1968. He capped his outstanding rookie year with an All-Big East appearance, receiving second team accolades from the league coaches.

Personal Life

Marcus is the son of Carla White. He is teammates with Thomas Claggett, who also saw action for the Frederick Douglass High School. Marcus, also nicknamed Bones, wears a necklace that he made with a "skull" that he got from Six Flags. However, he is prohibited by coach Brian Kelly to wear it in public. He and teammate Marty Gilyard have designed a new wristband, described as two small wrist bands connected, that they would like to market.

High School

The versatile Barnett attended Frederick Douglass High School where he played under head football coach J.C. Pinkney and played on both offense and defense. As a junior, he not only claimed second-team all-conference honors in the gridiron, but also cleared a 6'5" in the high jump to help Frederick Douglass HS win the state 4A championship. But it was not the only title Barnett has a hand on winning as he also dished out a noteworthy performance in the school's division championship run after the team posted a 12-1 win-loss record. Barnett registered 22 catches for 552 yards and 8 touchdowns to go with 25 tackles on defense to earn first-team all-league and all-metro Washington selection and honorable mention all-state honors as a senior. He capped his high school career by taking part in the area all-star game. On a sidenote, Barnett also was recognized as an academic honor roll in high school.

College

Barnett received a two-star rating from Scout.com as a wide receiver and chose to play for Cincinnati over Maryland after earning a scholarship from the Bearcat coaching staff with his performance in the summer camp.

2006

After getting hung up by the NCAA Clearinghouse due to document problems, Barnett was forced to sit out and redshirt his freshman year.

2007

Barnett finally saw action the following year as a redshirt freshman, making his debut against Southeast Missouri State where he caught 3 passes for 16 yards. He caught his first touchdown the following week, a five-yarder from Ben Mauk then dived on a blocked punt on the endzone, capping the game with 5 receptions for 61 yards to help the Bearcats win over Oregon State. He turned out back-to-back two touchdown reception games in a win against Marshall and @ San Diego State, also registering a career long 80-yard reception against SDSU. He recorded a career high 210 receiving yards in a loss to West Virginia (10 catches and 2 TDs) then ended the regular season with a career high 11 receptions and three touchdowns (127 yards) in a win over Syracuse. In his postseason debut, Barnett was limited to 2 catches for 17 yards against Southern Miss in the Papajohns.com Bowl after sustaining a broken leg.

He ended his first year as a Bearcat with 62 receptions for 862 yards and a school record 13 touchdown catches, earning a Big East Conference all-league second team honors and claiming the team's Newcomer of the Year award.
