The Louisville Cardinals is the University of Louisville's football program which represents the school in NCAA Division I football tourney. The Cards, which has joined several conference affiliations started play, like every other team, in the Independent scene. Two years after in 1914, they joined both the Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath. Assoc. and the Southern Intercollegiate Ath. Assoc. It was 3 and 28 fruitless years, respectively, for Louisville before going independent once more in 1942. They returned with the Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath. Assoc. in '46 where they captured their first ever conference title a year later. The team joined the Ohio Valley Conference for only a year then went Independent again. In 1964, they joined the Missouri Valley Conference and was conference champions in 1970 and '72.

Not until Louisville became part of Conference USA that the team became champions again as the team went titleless for almost 30 years. But the team made up for lost time as they captured the Conference USA title in 2000,'01,and '04 before jumping to the Big East in '05. Louisville also won the Big East championship in the 2006-07 season, raising their total conference titles to 7.
