Louisiana Tech Bulldogs represent the Louisiana Tech University in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision's Western Athletic Conference. Louisiana Tech's football program started way back in 1901, opening the school's campaign with back-to-back losses to Louisiana State and Arkansas. The team's first win only came later in 1904, its lone victory that season. The team spent its first 14 seasons in the independent scene before joining the Louisiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1915. The Bulldogs made a breakthrough that very same year with the team's first conference title. Louisiana Tech joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1925 through 1941 then became a member of the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference from 1939 through 1947. The Bulldogs claimed three titles in the LIC before leaving for the Gulf States Conference in 1948. Louisiana Tech captured a number of championships with the GSC, including ten conference championships (five of them shared) and the team's first ever national championship, the NCAA College Division Mideast Region title in 1968 (after finishing the season with a 9-2-0 record). Louisiana Tech's first Bowl Game also happened during that national championship year, beating Akron in the Grantland Rice Bowl. Louisiana Tech then joined the Southland Conference in 1971 and wasted no time making an immediate impact, finishing the season with a 9-2-0 record, a first Southland Conference Championship, and a second NCAA College Division Midwest Region title. The Bulldogs completed an impressive triumphant run from 1971 to '74, winning 44 out of the team's 48 games, and claiming 4 conference titles, and 4 national championship titles/selections (in '71 and '72 the team won the NCAA College Division Mideast Region Champions; in '73, the NCAA Division II National Championship; and in '74, a United Press International College Division National Championship selection). The team also appeared in five Bowl Games in that span, including 4 straight victories. The Bulldogs first Division I-A Bowl Game came a few years later when the team defeated Louisville in the Independence Bowl of 1977. Louisiana Tech was a Division II school from 1973-74, but was reclassified, as Division I in 1975, as Division I-A in 1978, and as Division I-AA in 1982. The team's stint with Southland lasted until 1986, afterwhich, the team switched back into the independent scene. In 1989. the school was reclassified into a Division I-A school. The team had an uneventful stint with the Big West Conference from 1993-1995 with a dismal 11-22 record.

From 1996 to 2000, Louisiana Tech became independent again before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2001. 2001 broke some dry spells in La Tech football: 11 years without a Bowl Game appearance, and 17 years without a conference title. As of 2006, the Bulldogs have claimed 23 conference titles, 5 national titles/selections, and six Bowl game victories. Conference-mates Louisiana Tech and Fresno State also meet in a rivalry game, the Battle of the Bone (fondly called so as both teams are nicknamed "Bulldogs"), with Fresno State enjoying a 6-2-0 advantage.

[edit] Highlights

In 1992, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, carrying the momentum from its 8-1-2 record the previous season, visited Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears in their season opener. The Bulldogs, down by 2, relied on a last second field goal kick from Chris Boniol to snatch a 1-point victory over the Bears, 10-9 for the team's first win of 1992.
