The University of Louisiana at Monroe's football team, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, play under the Sun Belt Conference in NCAA's Division I-Bowl Subdivision. The team's first recorded season in 1951 was quite a success, with the team of Coach James Malone winning 6 of their 8 games, including three straight to end the season. The team spent its first two seasons in the independent scene before joining the Gulf States Conference from 1953 through 1970. There was not much success for the Warhawks, then known as Indians, in the GSC as the team failed to make headway in its new home. After a lackluster stint with GSC, ULM became independent for a year (1971) before being admitted into the Southland Conference in 1972. The school was also reclassified from an NCAA College Division school in 1966, to Division II in 1973, Division I in 1975, Division I-A in 1978, and to Division I-AA in 1982. After over three decades without a title, ULM wrote a page on its football history after winning their first conference title (shared Southland Conference title) in 1983, with a 5-1-0 record. The team however outdid themselves later in 1987, winning not only the Southland Conference Championship (6-0-0 record), but also claiming the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship (13-2-0 win-loss-tie card) under Coach Pat Collins. ULM claimed two more Southland Conference titles in 1990 and '92, before leaving SC in 1995. ULM reclaimed its Division I-A status in 1994 then became a Division I-A independent team in 1996. The Warhawks have struggled since, as the team never made it past the .500 winning mark since 1993. As a consolation though, ULM shared the Sun Belt Conference title in 2005 with Arkansas State and UL Lafayette when all three teams topped the conference with identical 5-2 records.

As of 2006, ULM has won just 43% of their games since its inception, has claimed 1 national and 5 conference titles, and is yet to appear in a postseason Bowl Game. The team has also placed within the top 20 in five occassions, the highest placing achieved in 1992 when the team placed first in NCAA ranking with a 10-3-0 record. ULM currently has an Intraconference rivalry with UL Lafayette, battling the Cajuns in the Battle on the Bayou (ULM leads the series, 22-20).
