The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns football team is an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football team, currently playing for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette under the Sun Belt Conference. UL Lafayette's first year of football happened in 1902, playing its first game on a losing cause against Louisiana State. Previously named "Bulldogs," UL Lafayette was an independent team from 1902 through 1913 before joining the Louisiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1914. In its first year with the LIAA, the Cajuns recovered from a 0-3 start to win the rest of their games enroute to the team's first ever conference championship. The team did a repeat in back-to-back fashion a couple of years later, when the Cajuns went undefeated in conference play (5-0-0) to claim the LIAA championships in 1916 and '17. The team did a pretty decent job in its stint with the LIAA, only dropping below .500 twice in 12 seasons. 11 years and five conference titles later, UL Lafayette left for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1925 but failed to make a championship bid in its new home. In 1939, Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference admitted the team where the Cajuns would pick up their 6th conference title. The team's first Bowl Game appearance happened in 1944, with the Ragin' Cajuns beating Arkansas-Monticello in the Oil Bowl, 24-7. In 1948, ULL left the LIC and headed into the Gulf States Conference. In the team's 22 years with the GSC, UL Lafayette was handled by six different coaches (Mitchell, Swanson, Didier, Bell, Hoggatt, and Faulkinberry) but managed to capture four Gulf States Conference Championships (2 shared), and appear in the Grantland Rice Bowl (loss to Tennessee State in 1970). UL Lafayette left the GSC in favor of the Southland Conference in 1971. The team won its first and only title in Southland, 11th overall, in 1976 with a 4-1-0 record. In 1982, UL Lafayette became a Division I-A Independent team for 11 seasons before joining the Big West Conference in 1993. The Cajuns captured back-to-back titles in their first two seasons with the BWC (identical 5-1-0 win-loss-tie record in conference play) before once again becoming a Division I-A Independent school from 1996 to 2000.

UL Lafayette joined its 7th home, the Sun Belt Conference, in 2001 but couldn't shake off the team's subpar performances since 1996, atleast not until 2005 where the Cajuns recorded a 6-5 record and a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship. As of 2006, the Ragin' Cajuns have won 14 conference titles, played in two Bowl Games, and have registered over 400 wins and a winning percentage just a shade under the .500 mark.
