The Louisiana State Tigers represent the Louisiana State University in NCAA's Division I-A college football tournament. LSU's football team started play in 1893 as an independent team and has since been considered as one of the more consistently successful college football programs in the nation. As early as 1896, the Tigers have placed themselves in the record books with their first conference title, courtesy of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (LSU just joined "SIAA" that year). LSU won another conference title in 1908, the same year the Tigers won their first "national title," (this recognition was from other poll organizations as collegiate football's renowned polling org, the AP poll, only began in 1936) before joining the Southern Conference in 1922. The team only spent eleven seasons with Southern conference (the team were conference champs in their 1932 farewell season) before becoming one of the charter members of the Southeastern Conference in 1933. It took the Tigers just three years to settle down on its new home as in 1935, with a 9-2 win-loss record and a first Southeastern Conference Championship, the team was recognized as national champs by the Williamson System. A year later, the same organization recognized LSU as the national titlists when it successfully defended its SEC championship, finishing the season with a 9-1-1 record. That year also marked the first time Louisiana State participated in a postseason Bowl Game (was defeated by Santa Clara in the Sugar Bowl). 1958 was another breakthrough season for the Tigers as during this period, LSU was ranked first both in the Final AP Rank and the Final Coaches' Poll rank, leading to its first unanimously recognized national championship. The team also bagged both the SEC title and the Sugar Bowl that year. The last time the Tigers won these many titles was in 2003 when the team once again won the national title, the SEC title, the SEC West Divison title, and the Sugar Bowl.

As of 2007, LSU has compiled 693 wins in 1118 games. In addition to the team's three national titles and 13 conference championships, LSU also has 4 SEC Western Division titles and 39 postseason bowl game appearances (winning 20). LSU also covets the Golden Boot (trophy given to the winner of the Arkansas-LSU game), and the Tiger Rag (trophy given to the winner of the LSU-Tulane game).

[edit] Highlights

The Bluegrass Miracle. In 2002, the 16th ranked LSU Tigers survived an upset bid from the unranked Kentucky Wildcats by winning the game 33-30 on a miraculous 75-yard Hail Mary pass in the final seconds of the game.
