Kraig Urbik (born September 23, 1985) is an offensive lineman playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA college football tournament. Urbik's versatility on the line has been tested several times at Wisconsin as he had played in and out of the right tackle and right guard positions but without any drastic drop in terms of his effectivity. A consistent starter who has started in every game he has played at U-dub, Urbik has emerged to become the acknowledged leader in the Wisconsin offensive line who has made life easier for the Badger rushers.

Personal Life

Kraig is the son of Kenneth and Joanne Urbik. He majored in agricultural journalism at the University of Wisconsin.

High School

Urbik attended Hudson High School in Hudson, Wisconsin where he was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, track). He placed fifth in shot put at Division 1 state meet as a senior and lettered in all three sports he played. On the gridiron, Urbik played under head football coach Craig Jilek and was teammates with fellow Wisconsin recruit Eric Vanden Heuvel. During his career, Urbik showcased his durability as he started every game as a junior and senior. In his last season with the Raiders, he was named as a team captain, the team MVP, a PrepStar All-American, and was a first-team all-state selection by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after helping lead Hudson to an 8-3 finish enroute to coach Jilek’s first playoff berth and Hudson’s first-ever playoff victory. He graduated from Hudson as one of the highly rated high school prospects in the state and in the nation with Rivals.com naming him the No. 3 player in Wisconsin, Scout.com listing him as the #24 Offensive lineman and rating him a four star recruit, while SuperPrep putting him in its top 55 players in the Midwest.

College

Early in March of 2003, Urbik gave his verbal commitment to play for the Badgers. He also received several offers but decided to go to UW because it has always been what he wanted while growing up as a Badger fan. [1]

2004

Redshirted. Urbik was named as the team's scout offense player of the week after helping the team prepare for the Michigan State game.

2005

Coming out of his redshirt freshman year, Urbik competed for the starting right tackle position but was momentarily derailed by an ankle injury during one spring practice. He eventually won the job and became the first Badger freshman to start at tackle since former All-American Chris McIntosh did the trick in 1996. He made his first career start against Bowling Green at home and helped the Badgers defeat the Falcons, 56-42. One of his finest games that year came against Minnesota where he stopped Golden Gopher defensive end Steve Davis and held the speedy 6-2, 230-pound freshman to three unassisted tackles, no sacks, no tackles for loss, and no quarterback hurries in UW's 38-34 win. He went on and started all 13 games that season, helping Wisconsin sport a 10-3 overall record including a win against Auburn in his postseason debut at the Capital One Bowl. With Urbik on the line, the Badgers averaged 168.2 rush yards per game and 228.4 pass yards per game although the O-line allowed 37 sacks for total losses of 234 yards. Nonetheless, Urbik received second team Freshman All-American citations from both The Sporting News and Rivals.com.

2006

During his sophomore year, Urbik was moved to the right guard spot, the same position he played during his high school days. According to offensive line coach Bob Palcic, the move was brought about by the team's need for a guard who could run and pull and get his best five players on the field. He made his season debut playing his new position at BGSU and helped the Badgers rush for 197 yards and pass for 124 while giving up only a sack to the Falcons. Like the previous season, Urbik remained a starter through the season, helping the Badgers power to a 12-1 overall record including a win in his return trip to the Capital One Bowl against Arkansas. For the season, Urbik and the rest of the O-line helped the Badger offense manufacture 2,102 yards rushing (4th in the Big Ten) and 2,749 passing yards (5th in the Big Ten) although they still allowed 30 sacks for 219 yards loss.

2007

As a junior, Urbik continued to start/play at the right guard position for the first ten games of the season. Throughout the year, Urbik provided solid protection and big holes that allowed rusher P.J. Hill to enjoy a remarkable year with his ground game. Against The Citadel, Hill matched the school record with five touchdowns, including four rushing scores, while compiling 168 yards on 25 carries (6.7 avg.) as UW came away with a 45-31 victory. During the 17-13 win over Iowa, Urbik helped Hill rush for 113 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries against a stout Hawkeye defense to earn the team's offensive player of the week honors. In the dominant 30-point blow-out of Indiana, Urbik helped the team rush for 279 yards and pass for 144 more while allowing just two sacks to earn a second UW offensive player of the week accolade. Against 3rd ranked Ohio State however, the line struggled and gave up 10 sacks while rushing for only 12 yards while adding insult to the injury of right tackle Vanden Heuvel. That predicament forced Urbik back to his previous position at RT for the rest of the year. In his first game back at right tackle against Michigan, Wisconsin gained 232 rushing yards and 245 passing yards while preventing any sack as the Badgers defeated the Wolverines, 37-21. In the regular season finale at Minnesota, UW amassed 325 rushing yards and 118 passing yards while allowing just a sack in the 41-34 victory.

In his third straight bowl game appearance, Urbik helped the offense gain 347 yards of total offense although it allowed 3 sacks for 16 yards loss in the close 17-21 defeat. By season's end, Wisconsin was No.2 in the Big Ten and 21st overall in terms of rushing offense with an average of 200.77 yards per game and Urbik, who had 39 straight starts at both guard and tackle positions, was named a consensus second-team All-Big Ten selection.

2008

For his senior year, Urbik is reportedly switching back to the right guard spot. He has been awarded with several preseason accolades such as first-team All-Big Ten selections by Phil Steele, Athlon, Lindy's and Blue Ribbon as well as 4th team all-American honors from Steele. He was also named into the Outland Trophy Watch List.
