The Kentucky Wildcats traces its football roots in year 1881, playing as an Independent squad up until year 1895. An NCAA DIvision I-A Football team, the Wildcats joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1895 and was a member for 27 seasons. In 1922, Kentucky joined the Southern Conference and was affiliated for eleven seasons before becoming a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1933. It has been a slow progress for the Kentucky football program as the team went without any conference championship or even a postseason bowl game appearance until the 1940's. In 1946, renowned coach Paul "Bear" Bryant took over the team and led the Wildcats to its first ever bowl game in 1947, winning the Great Lakes Bowl over Villanova. Coach Bryant brought his squad to some more postseason bowl games (1950, 1951, and 1952) and was ranked #7 in the 1950 season (when the team won their first SEC championship). During this same year, the Wildcats faced off with then #1 ranked (in Sagarin ratings) Oklahoma and won, thus claiming that the win earned the squad a national title that year. The team's only other conference title came in 1976, when the team was led by coach Fran Curci. The Wildcats tried to duplicate this feat the following year, and actually came close to it when the team went 10-1 and undefeated in SEC play. Unfortunately, despite being ranked 6th by the AP Poll, the team did not qualify for a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions.

The Wildcats has so far been in 11 postseason bowl games, with 6 victories, has won two Southeastern conference championships, and a 50.18% All-time winning percentage. Kentucky's known rivals are Indiana and Louisville (whom they play annually for the Governor's Cup).
