Kellen Lewis (born Kellen Chadwick Lewis on January 25, 1987) plays quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers in the NCAA college football tournament. In two seasons with Indiana, Lewis has provided stability in the Hoosier offense and has developed greatly from a mere third-stringer to the team's focal point on offense, helping his team make it to the postseason for the first time in 14 years. In his second year as Indiana's chief signal caller, Lewis threw for 3,043 yards to establish a new school record for the season while also improving his total offense to 3,779 yards. In addition, Lewis has also set new single-season records for passing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns by a quarterback (37) and completions (265).

[edit] Personal Life

Kellen is the son of Kiser and Saprina Lewis, both athletes in their own right. His father was a former linebacker at Florida A&M in the NCAA before turning pro and playing for the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers. His mother, on the other hand, was also a Florida A&M alumnus and an All-American track and field hurdler at her alma mater. Kellen is a general studies major at the Indiana University.

[edit] High School

Lewis attended Mandarin High School where he played on both ends of the field, as a quarterback on offense and as a cornerback on defense. During his senior year, the dynamic quarterback amassed more than 2,600 yards and 24 touchdowns to earn a couple of Florida Class 6A District Player of the Year honors.

Redshirted.

[edit] 2006

Lewis started his redshirt freshman season as the team's third-string quarterback, playing behind starter Blake Powers and backup Graeme McFarland. However, with what coach Bill Lynch refer to as "a strange set of events,” Lewis was pushed to first string in just the second game of the season against Ball State. After McFarland separated his shoulder in the second series of the game, Lewis came in and spearheaded the Hoosiers' turnaround from a 17-point deficit to a 24-23 win. He finished that game completing 15 of 28 passes for 228 yards and 1 TD while also rushing for 88 yards on 12 carries with 1 scoring run. The following week, he dished out another solid game as he went 20-for-40 for 238 yards and 1 TD in a loss to Southern Illinois. In the course of the season, Lewis established his career highs in completions (26 @ Purdue), attempts (43 @ Minnesota), passing yards (321 also against the Gophers), touchdown passes (5 against Michigan State), carries (14 also against the Spartans), rush yards (103 against the Boilermakers), and scored a total of 5 scoring runs. He also turned out notable performances noteworthy of weekly accolades, including his 255-yard, 3-TD effort against Iowa that netted him a share of the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, a USA Today Player of the Week, and Rivals.com's National Freshman of the Week honors. His 6 touchdowns accounted against the Spartans also made Lewis the 4th Hoosier to do so while his 5 TD passes ranks as the second-highest single-game total in Hoosier history.

Lewis capped his maiden year as Indiana's most valuable player, while also claiming a spot at the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and The Sporting News' and Rivals.com's Freshman All-American squads. Lewis completed one of the finest performances by a freshman in school history after completing 190 of 346 passes for 2,221 yards and 14 TDs with a passer efficiency rating of 118.14.

[edit] 2007

Lewis earned the starting job full-time as a sophomore, opening 2007 with three straight three touchdown outings and passing for no less than 137 yards in wins over Indiana State, Western Michigan, and Akron. He also established season highs in carries (18), rush yards (199), and TDs (2) against the Zips. In week 4, he established season best in attempts (51) in IU's first loss of the season against Illinois. Lewis also established new career highs in completions (30 against Penn State), and passing yards (354 against Ball State). He passed for over 100-yards in all 13 games and except for a game against Wisconsin where he got shut-out, threw for atleast a touchdown in every game. He also made his postseason debut against Oklahoma State in the Insight Bowl, completing 22 of 43 passes for 204 yards and 1 TD and rushing for 83 yards and 1 TD on 10 carries.

Lewis joins Antwaan Randle El (1998-01) as the only quarterbacks in school history with 5,000 career passing yards (5,264), 400 career completions (455), 700 career attempts (788), 40 career passing touchdowns (42) and 6,000 career total yards of offense (6,441). For his efforts, Lewis claimed Second Team All-Big Ten postseason accolades from the league media and coaches.

[edit] 2008

In March, Lewis was suspended from the football team for undisclosed reasons. He was reinstated in July but had to compete for the starting QB spot with sophomore Ben Chappell for the duration of the fall camp. He was named the starter days prior to the season-opener.

Lewis opened the season with a bang, going 17-of-27 for 144 yards with 9 carries for 185 yards in the win over Western Kentucky to earn his fifth career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor.
