The Iowa State "Cyclones" is one of the 12 teams that comprise the Big 12 Conference of NCAA's Division I-A. The Cyclones represent the Iowa State University in the North Division of the Big 12. Formerly known as the Cardinals, Iowa State football officially began in the Independent scene in 1892. From 1908 through 1927, they were part of Missouri Valley Conference where they won their only conference championships thus far (1911, '12). In 1928, Iowa State joined the Big 8 Conference but had so-so seasons up until four decades later, in 1971, when the Cyclones finally made it into a post season Bowl game against Louisiana State for the Sun Bowl on a losing cause. The Cyclones have a total of nine Bowl Game appearances, winning only two of them and ranks #96 out of 107 eligible NCAA teams in terms of overall winning percentage.

Due to its unimpressive recent runs in recent years, the team has decided to let go of coach Dan McCarney who has coached the Cyclones since 1995, replacing him with former Central Florida, Auburn and Texas defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.
