The Iowa Hawkeyes represent the University of Iowa in NCAA's Division I-A college football tournament. Competing in the Big Ten Conference, the Hawkeyes was originally an independent team that formally competed for the first time in 1889 against Grinnell College --- the first intercollegiate football game in the state of Iowa. Although the team got defeated, the event would be remembered as a breakthrough moment in the history of the Hawkeyes football. A few years later, Iowa joined the Western Inter-State University Football Association and captured its first title in 1896. Iowa then joined the Big Ten Conference in 1900 and wasted no time making their mark as they captured the 1900 Big Ten Conference title (co-champ). While playing in the Big 10, Iowa also was affiliated with the Missouri Valley Conference by 1907 and captured yet another conference title in its maiden year in the MVC. While its affiliation with MVC lasted only for four years, Iowa continued to make waves in the Big 10, adding 10 more Big 10 titles on their stash.

All in all, the Hawkeyes have compiled 13 Conference titles, one national championship (1921), with 3 other national championship selections, 22 Post Season Bowl Game Appearances (winning eleven), one Heisman trophy winner. and 60 All Americans. The teams is also 60th overall in terms of all-time winning percentage with a 52.475% mark.

Highlights

In the 2004-05 season, despite a slew of injuries that hampered the Hawkeyes' running game, Iowa was able to finish strong in the season as they went on to win their 11th Big Ten title. The Hawkeyes' was awarded with a trip to the Capital One Bowl to face the defending national champion Louisiana State (LSU). With the clock running out and Iowa down by a point, Drew Tate fired a 56 yard, game-winning touchdown pass to Warren Holloway as time expired to give the team its 11th post season Bowl game victory.
